There is plenty of time for a woman to choose to have an abortion prior to the fetus having a heart beat. So I believe the law should allow Elective abortions prior to a heart beat being present. After that only where the woman's life is at risk. That is fair in my opinion.

    Why would you disagree?

Yes a heartbeat means nothing. We terminate brain dead people all the time with a heartbeat

That is exactly my take on it......I dont think it's a person the second the load hits the egg..as some do.... But once theres a detectable heartbeat...thats a person in there.... with the same rights, and protections under the law as you and me.....

A fetus is brain dead until week 24 to week 27 based on eeg. So week 24 it has some rights. It is not a person until birth

    Hahahaha :roflol:

You think premature babies are brain dead. You do realise that "fetuses" (as you call them) have been born at 22 weeks and survived? Are these little babies "brain dead", according to your opinion?

I personally believe a woman has the one and only say in abortion in any case. Rape, accidental pregnancy, just don't want the baby, so on. It's her choice. I'd prefer to see abortions performed earlier than later, but that is not my choice to make. However, I don't believe abortion should be used as some type of contraceptive like a woman watching into a clinic every other month for an abortion either. It's still her choice, but I feel that such a scenario falls under being irresponsible as well.

Ok...i looked it up...(should have done that to begin with)...According to the American Association of Obstetrics...there is significant detectable brain activity at 12 Weeks...

To me, that sounds similar to saying that a rapist hovering over the hospital bed is the only one with rights if the woman is unconscious in a coma.

The woman, in such a situation, has no choice, and that's why it is wrong. She is in a state where she is incapable of making any choice or providing consent, ergo imposing on her fundamental rights is wrong. Not being able to give consent is equivalent to not giving consent.

The fetus does not give consent.

Sounds like a bit of a leap to me, but I'm also not 100% sure what you're getting at. Obviously anyone in a coma can't consent to anything.

I'd like to see that research please, because detectable brain waves is not what I have read from numerous research studies, what I have read is that there is ECG activity, which by the way is almost exactly the same level as found in Jello. All cells produce electrical activity, and the only reference I can find from AAO concerning brain waves at 12 weeks is from a lecture given in 1964 which pro-lifers use, take out of context and cherry pick to suit.

I always wonder why you go round the same arguments you have used before, all of which have been blown to pieces on numerous occasions.

I'm no neurosurgeon but doesn't it take brain waves to make the heart beat?

As for brain dead adults "pulling the plug" usually entails shutting off machinery that's artificially keeping them alive,, think beating hearts. It would seem the fetus is more viable at that point than "brain dead" adults.

If it had the same rights it would also have the same restrictions, it could not use another person's body to sustain it's life. I can't, you can't, it can't.

Abortion is legal until 23 weeks when the fetus becomes viable. That is a restricted right or protection it is given because it is able to live outside the woman.

Most abortions are performed well before that. After viability abortions are done because of health/life problems with either the fetus or the woman.

Abortion is only interesting to discuss on a philosophical level, i.e. "When does a life become a life?" and from the view of the most fundamental, if not the one and only, of human rights; an individuals right to their own body.

Discussing it from a Statist and juridical point of view if distasteful and rather uninteresting because the government should give niente about other people's bodies. Advocating for restrictions and bans is boring and leads nowhere. I feel abortion should always be discussed as a philosophical issue because it makes it much more interesting and much less hateful

Then feel free to discuss it in the Religion and Philosophy Forum, where it will be interesting to you.

This is the Abortion Forum, abortion is discussed. You may be bored.

Basic brainwaves that support autonomous functionality exist in those declared to be brain dead too.

Does that mean we must keep them on life support even though all higher brain functionality is absent?
