No, I don’t think it’s semantics. I prefer accuracy in discussions involving science. It’s becoming clearer and clearer many aren’t interested in factual information on this topic. I find that odd, especially since it’s coming mostly from people who generally invoke “science” as authoritative to their worldview. Prions are like nothing else.

They contain no DNA or RNA.

If we aren’t comfortable saying SARS-CoV-2 is closer to the common cold viruses than anything else, I don’t think we should claim mad cow or CJD are viral infections.

Not sure but viral diseases from China include SARS (774 deaths) , Bird flu(455 deaths) Hong Kong flu (1 million deaths, 100,000 in US), Asian flu( 1 million deaths), Spanish flu (50 million deaths), C19 (deaths unknown).

But viruses from that area of the world are pikers compared to bacterial disease. Plague killed at least 100 million globally and maybe as many as 200 million.

But China seems to be a one hit wonder with bacterial diseases. Most other big ones originated in Africa or the Middle East.

I think we can ponder why and try and prevent further pandemics from China without being xenophobic. Human life and it’s preservation trumps unnecessary political correctness in my opinion. Facts over feelings.

Because it means that it really needs to be addressed before they come up with an even WORSE one.

It's not from Spain. None of the combatant nations wanted to admit to having a terrible disease ravaging them while WWI was going on and so cranked up their propaganda ministries to suppress any reportage of same. Spain was neutral, and so had regular reportage going on which gave many people the idea it had come from there.

    https://www.history.com/news/why-was-it-called-the-spanish-flu

Nobody really knows where the Spanish Flu came from, though the first known case came from the United States

if you look at my post, you can dig into it, and each originate from X country from that continent. for example H1N1, is from Mexico swine slaughter house own by US company. Zika is from brazil etc etc, origin can be trace back to single city or even single place.

Of course, but I asked what country has produced multiple viruses, and you cited continents that have produced multiple viruses.

Same goes for the pic of hogs crowded together .Not enough room in those holding pens to eat and drink .

I helped to raise hogs for market while growing up. Hogs can die if they get too hot. We used sprinkler systems in hot weather. With plenty of room in big pens .

We had a flu virus to kill half our first group we raise for market but it stayed in the hogs .Grandpa never grew that breed again. Black English breed . We used Yorkshire and Hampshire after that.

Our breeding stock roamed free in a pasture.

Thanks. I’m not a commercial hog guy so that’s out of my wheelhouse. We have some Kune Kune pasture pigs that we just let run with the cattle for the most part. I do know viral diseases raise hades with pigs. If I need a veterinarian to look at a pig, he will only come if he can guarantee it will be at least 48 hours before he has to go to a regularly scheduled visit to a commercial operation. Many vets I think now contract with operations under agreement not to visit any other swine operations at all. Swine social distancing. :)

so i'm not sure what you try to getting at, there are plenty countries had multiple virus originated from. so far china have 2-3, and are you gonna compare a country of 1.4 billion to some small country in africa which only has tens millions? even entire africa continents has less people than china or india. for the pass 100 years, we at least got dozens epidemic or pandemic from various place.

How many African "continents" do you think there are? I was only aware of the one.

It's posts like this that illustrate why people ignore you. Pop of Africa 1.2b, pop of China 1.4b, pop of India 1.35b. Very obvious what he/she meant and that the 's' was unintended

Well people ignore me when they are unable to defend their positions under scrutiny.

I get the difference in population. However, I don't see the relevance.
China is ONE country, and therefore all of the risky activities there, just like all of the risky activities in any country, should be able to be controlled.

Perhaps I was a bit unfair to not assume that. Although, at risk of sounding like the 'grammar police', without the 's' it should have read, even THE entire africa continent, given that, even entire africa continent would not be grammatically correct.

You don't really prove your position.

I don't see how a country is liable for a virus mutation they did not ask for to happen. The US knows the existence of wet markets in China, that as far as I know might as well take place in 3/4 of the countries. The US did not take any precautions beforehand against countries who do that. That's the US taking their own risks in letting their citizens travel back and forth and accepting other citizens to come and visit them. Nobody is making the US to do that.

Are you not liable for causing an accidental car crash in which someone is killed?

Great point you make actually. Presumably if a country was dangerous enough, a country wouldn't allow it's citizens to travel back from that country - at least not immediately. Not to mention refusing to allow tourists from that country. The fact that countries were allowing tourists and returning citizens from China is certainly one EVENT in the CHAIN of events. However, let's not forget the CRITICAL first event which the Chinese government are responsible for.

Not when you're sitting in the passengers seat having no control.

First event? The virus mutation? Exactly where does it say that a government is responsible for a virus mutation from animals to humans? I never heard of such a thing.

While it's beyond obvious that the US deliberately takes a risk to have trade and leisure visits with China and probably well over half of the globe having wet markets where virus mutations can happen. The US afterall is responsible for their own borders, with their border patrol etc.

And as I said, what other countries have had as many PEOPLE as China? Diseases affecting people tend to come from places that have a lot of....uh...people. That seems a fairly simple idea to me.

OK, here we go. If people with diseases come from a country, let's not allow people from that country to come here, that way nobody here will ever get a disease and we'll all live forever.

What? Work on helping people to find cures for diseases? And maybe that way we'll find cures for our own? What, you think people from other countries are human beings too?

That's obviously not going to happen, but I'm acknowledging that each country has played a role in the virus being allowed to be transmitted to its population given that they know that China has a bad history with viruses but allow travel from there anyway.

Isn't that what the CDC does?
