A lot of "ifs" as an advanced civilization could easily have existed and become extinct from an asteroid impact on another planet even within that range. The only real way of detecting advanced intelligent life on another planet is if they broadcast radio waves that SETI can pick-up and then only if they reach is during our current timeframe regardless of where in the universe it might be. This imposes a huge time constraint upon us as we can only detect radio waves that reach us in our own time.

Of course the quesiton of "are we alone" is really a rather absurd question. It doesn't matter at all and is only a question of curiousity and not really of science. The real absurdity of course is any belief that we are alone. What possible reason is there for thinking that we're alone in the universe?

Everything in life is an 'if'...but we need to keep moving forward even when forward is not clearly defined or is questionable. I doubt 'radio waves' have enough power to go very far from their origination point. SETI can also look for methane or hydrogen or water along with surface temperature and electro-magnetic waves and distance to their star/sun and shape of the orbits, etc. plus anything detectible from intelligent beings. It's a crap shoot but lots of people play craps!

Are we alone is a cultural statement that sounds good on the 10PM news...but it's still a valid question...
