The world war against the coronavirus has some parallels with the 2013 movie World War Z, in which a zombie infestation is approached by medical experts as a pandemic.

One character in the movie posits that the plague is a virus and that development of a vaccine depends on finding the source. In the original script, characters speculate that the virus originated in China, but that was deleted in the hope the film would be approved by Chinese censors. The film was still banned in China.

In the movie, early signs of the zombie virus are traced to South Korea, which in real life, has had the second worst outbreak of the coronavirus.
