I have a friend who worships Jesus. That's all he does. He worships and worships almost to the point of being an idolizer. I have a problem with worship. In the bible it says we are not supposed to worship idols or gods. My friend is almost maniatical, insane about worship. He sings, he applauds, he prays. etc. That's his whole life, nothing more. No social life, no GF. etc. The question is, do you really think worship in the bible and by the angels is the same as worship today? From reading these verses, I get the word "Worship" to just mean, follow him or listen to him.

    Hebrews 13:15 ESV
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

    Hebrews 1:6 ESV
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.”

    John 9:38 ESV
He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

    Matthew 4:10 ESV
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

    Luke 24:52 ESV
And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

    Matthew 28:17 ESV
And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

    Matthew 28:9 ESV
And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.

    Matthew 16:24 ESV
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

If he's making a "show" of it to seem righteous, then that's not really worship--that serves his own ego. But, if he's just loving God with all his being in the joy of that love overflows, then that is good.

Paul was that kind of worshiper--very zealous--that was Paul's "whole life." Nothing wrong with it at all.

BTW--You can't make an idol of the one true God--he IS God--you are supposed to worship Him. But again--if it's for show and for people to think, "oh--look at him...how righteous and good he must be!..." That's idolizing others' opinion of you, and idolizing self.

In the moment you said so you denied Jesus, isn't it?

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, 'Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' He called a little child, whom he placed among them. And he said: 'Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes a humble place — becoming like this child — is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. http://youtu.be/YaqQnhBtxaI

I do not worship anyone. I follow the teachings of Jesus. Worshipping at church is for fools. Like singing, dancing, clapping hands and ranting...that I will never do and no where in the bible it says you must do any of those things. Reasons I don't go to church.

"At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend"...?

Seems like it is telling you to worship Jesus--not simply think about him and model life after him.

Since Jesus said that true worshippers will worship God in spirit, it is absolutely imperative that we understand what that means. True worship then is worship from the inside out. In reaction to dull, routine, lifeless, boring worship services, many who yearn for a more meaningful, gratifying religious experience, are crying out that we need more emotion, more feeling in our worship to God. I do not necessarily disagree with that assessment, but there is a real danger in trying to produce with external techniques that which must emanate from the heart.

When a soldier salutes a superior officer, is that a gesture of worship? And if not, why should bending the knee necessarily be taken as such?

Jedi, I thought the Bible said that Christians are not to worship any other idols (not including God himself) or 'false' idols.

So a Christian can attend church and worship God, but God doesn't want them to worship anyone else who isn't God.

I think that's what it means, anyway.

    This is indeed commanding "worship."
    Again: Phil 2
[9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name,
[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
[11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

"above every name" "heaven...earth...under the earth..." "every tongue confess..." That is commanding worship. A gesture of respect, like "saluting" is not as profound.

Giving respect could be termed "worship" as in the Commonwealth countries style of referring to their magistrates as "your worship." However, worshiping a deity is different in degree of respect due, and respect given.

Can it be the sentence I read yesterday on one of our Christmas markets is for you? I had to laugh a lot when I read: "Make it like god: become human!"

    http://www.dailywordofgodgroup.com/why-go-to-church.htm

Not all churches are created equal, but if you are led to a Bible believeing church that truly worships and serves the Lord, is welcoming and you are getting fed the Word, fellow Christians are of a like-mind, your spirit is encouraged and this carries you through the rest of the week, then you have found refuge in this dark world and this is God's hope for you. I think not going on a regular basis opens the door to attacks from satan and one becomes bound to world thinking. God wants us to have fellowship with our Brothers and Sisters and what better place to do so than in the right church. I attend regularly and also have weekly gatherings with two different Small Groups. God is foremost on my mind 7 days a week and my spiritual growth is greater than ever and I finally understand what my relationship is with Him. I hope the same for all of you.

I have found being with fellow believers regularly that others have something to share that God wants for me and likewise I share because He has something another may need. We miss opportunities God gives us when we avoid circumstances and opportunites to gather.

Less time on PF, more time with Him.

To 'worship' requires humility, which doesnt sound like your OP.

Worship as mentioned in the NT:

    Matthew 4:10
Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.' "

    John 4:23
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

    Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

'Worship' is giving praise & honoring in deed and in truth. Most ppl dont really enter into sincere worship in church buildings as much is done for show as well as ppl are self-conscious in that environment. My best times of 'praise' worship are alone where I can enter in worshipping "in spirit & in truth," and not playing games to impress those around me who may be watching! And worship 'in deed' by being obedient to His Word per the scripture, "Obedience is better than sacrifice."

Unfortunately, many/most in the Christian community call 'worship' as the being together in a church building and singing songs....and zilch outside of the service.

If you really stopped and listened to the "church folk" singing their songs, they are full of blasphemy and none of it "worships" God. It's just a lot of song and dance with no substance.

What's missing here is any acknowledgment of the qualitative difference between worshiping God and worshiping anyone or anything else. Saluting a superior officer, at least in the US military, is, of itself, not "worship lite", because it's not worship at all, just an acknowledgment of the authority vested in that officer by a power greater than both of them.

I don't know what songs you're referring to and perhaps you are correct in some instances, however I find this not to be true in the church I belong to. Plenty of substance, plenty of real worship. Perhaps you should stop and listen. Then again if you're not one of His, then it's a moot point.

Why would an all powerful being require worship from a group of evolved primates?

    Seems counterintuitive to me.

All 'worshipping' is , is the intimate connection of the lesser with the greater, man with his Creator. Acknowledging the position of the greater as 'Father' and the believer's position as a 'Son.' Jesus was said to be the 1st of many sons. Worshipping is different for each, but humility, an attitude of humbleness, is the way to approach---not as Satan who said he was going to ascend to the throne of God, nor Adam who ate the fruit to be as God. Both were 'sons' as direct creations of God, but both had the attitude to usurp their father's position, and not to honor Him.

Humility is the acknowledgement of the greater by the lesser, and as scripture states, "The greatest enemy between man and God is man's pride."

Pride is the sin atheists are full of, with no humility in accepting even the 'possibility' of a greater Being. In fact, the closest most atheists get to humility is when they get off their 'thrones,' bend over, and wipe their butts! [IMG]

Yes, as opposed to the merely quantitative difference you implied - the point being, if you think a salute to a superior officer is essentially a lesser form of worship, I cannot help but question whether you understand what worship actually is.

    "not as profound" = "qualitative"
    "different degree" = "quantitative"

    What's your prob.?
