?

Should government have the power to arrest and jail journalists for their reporting?

including if not especially the power to arrest and jail journalists?

Trump called for jailing some journalists, so is there anyone who would support any such presidential or government power over the media? Maybe he was waaaayyy out of line? Maybe not?

"....that don't suit him". Total lie. Trump was referring to reporters who publish classified information. Publishing classified information does not fall under 'freedom of the press' protections....it's a crime no matter who does it.

I believe it is safe to say that if a poster doesn't cast a vote, he doesn't want to admit his position. And he's probably ashamed of it.

Are you saying that the arrest of journalists who publish what he's referring to as "classified information" suits him?

Actually, it is not a crime to publish classified information.

But couldn't government potentially classify any information it doesn't like?

There are laws against people divulging information that they were given as a government employee and told to keep secret, but once that information leaks out to the press, are we going to punish other people who did not sign a voluntary non-disclosure agreement?

There's going to be a real problem with democracy and transparency if the press can't talk about the misdoings of government.

Correct. If classified information is delivered to the media, freedom of the press says they can publish it. There was an attempt to punish The Washington Post for publishing classified information on the Vietnam War and the S.C. said "not gonna happen".

Should they be able to no they should not. Should reporters consider the ramifications to their country before reporting some things? Yes they should.

I voted "NO" with the knowledge that the permanent government already controls informational mediums of these United States.

I voted "Yes" regarding the executive branch. But I feel the political party in a one-party system would be better.

    That depends.

If government is, say, working with journalists to leak information to verify their fictional dossiers, for example.

The media working with government officials to push a narrative is one thing.

The media releasing criminal conduct of the government, like in Fast and Furious, is another.

Sure, of course. If the person is exposing national security secrets, calling for sedition or riots, or engaging in other criminal activities. What theory is there that journalists are immune from criminal laws we are all subject to? I can commit crimes is I put a sticker on my shirt that says "Journalist?"

It should be. Because of the Internet, anyone can instantly claim to be a journalist.

I wouldn't support this. We have freedom of the press, and that would definitely be a violation of that.

Well, depends on who you are. If you have a government clearance it is a crime to release classified information--it's not a crime to publish it, but the crime is in leaking it. Also, releasing some classified information could be classified as treason.
