when I was on the Junior National team at the then new USOTC in Colorado springs, we used to practice at the USAFA and a local USAF base that had a skeet and trap range. (Peterson AFB comes to mind). One day we are at the AFB and some high ranking officer-who was an avid skeet and trap shooter showed up. One of the things he told us is he hated jack rabbits because they made nuisance of themselves on the base=digging holes near runways. getting on the runways etc. So he told us if we saw jackrabbits and it was safe-shoot them. Well even Olympic trap loads aren't good on jackrabbits past about- 50 yards so I introduced some of the boys to the "ringed shell". We didn't hit too many but when you did-Kablam!@!!
I use a hybrid round of #2 shot and #4 shot. It gets the job done and you don't have to replace walls, doors, plumbing and your neighbor's car when its over. Most thugs that will break into your house aren't members of Seal Team 6. They won't fight to the death for your wallet and cash. I shot a guy in Iraq... aimed center mass. At the distance it hit his hand. He dove in a doorway and we never saw him again. Hand hit was good enough. Mission accomplished. (If you like Kel Tec, check out their new P50. Hard to get one right now but I WILL get one.)
I use a suppressed .300 Blackout, which at the range I would be shooting will hit center mass, dump all of its energy into the target, wouldn't suffer from overpenetration through walls anyway and will leave me able to hear the police dispatcher and the responding cops when they finally arrive.
