'A brazen new breed of criminals is taking up arms at unprecedented rates and they aren't afraid to use them. Read part one of The Age's investigation into how Melbourne became a gun city.' 'Despite Australia’s strict gun control regime, criminals are now better armed than at any time since then-Prime Minister John Howard introduced a nationwide firearm buyback scheme in response to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.' Guns and drugs..a profitable and deadly black market..are you sure you want more gun control? Source:https://www.theage.com.au/interactive/2016/gun-city/day1.html
Actually yes we do There has been a recent bust of a couple of illegal gun running groups and there is discussion about whether or not to increase the penalties for gun smuggling - and we probably will' Just because Criminals succeed once or twice does not mean we should hand over the keys to the fracking nation
We have penalties of $250,000 fine and ten years imprisonment for gun crimes like straw purchases and felons in possession. Why do we still have straw purchases and felons in possession?
Have you read the article that says: You've already handed over the keys to the "fracking nation".....to the criminals. Gun bans, like drug & booze bans simply create another violent Black Market.
All sorts of firearms are probably being smuggled into your country gratis by another country, probably a ME one with IS sympathies. Into the UK as well, I shouldn't wonder - it's only the criminal classes here who have guns, too.
Australians already have handed over the keys to the fracking nation . . . to whichever political party is currently in control of Australia. An unarmed population is a population of serfs. Own up to reality. At any time a political faction decides to 'take control', ignore existing laws, and do things exclusively to suit themselves, the unarmed citizenry is totally screwed and at their mercy. Reality. Enjoy.
Yeah suuuuuuuuure!! It really rubs some that we can have a thriving democracy AND all the benefits of a sane firearm legislation BTW did you notice the price on the AK 47 that was quoted in the article??
(Shrug) Yes, leftists in Russia laughed at warnings as well, right up until Joseph Stalin dropped a hobnailed boot on their necks. He made full use of his nation's useful leftist idiots; and politicians inside Australia are doing so as well. Eventually there will be the same results. Enjoy what you leftists will have EARNED.
Of course not. First you should decide on what you want to solve or accomplish & Australia has only accomplished disarming the law abiding & creating another violent Black Market. If you want to solve homicides & mass killings, you should focus on identifying & what motivates a killer, increase security at public events & enlist the citizens in helping (i.e. "If you see something, say something.") That means additional funding for Mental Health professionals both for the schools and the general population. I realize that increased security & Mental Health funding will be expensive but complex & deep rooted problems are rarely solved by cheap & easy measures.
Ouch! I think that they were missing the point that a determined killer will kill regardless of the weapons available to them: simple home made bombs, Molotov cocktails. It is first important to detect then treat violent mentally ill individuals & for that you need mental health care above all. I read where a $40,000- StG 44 was destroyed when its sale to a collector could have been much more effectively used. How stupid & wasteful
$20,000 is real steep for an AK, but I guess if one could use it as a tool in his profitable daily crime business, he would pay the money, and the tool would pay for itself quickly. With little competition from the good guys those $20k AK's are going to rule the roost.
Why don't your current laws prevent this? You -did- say you banned all the guns that can be used in armed robbery...?
One undisputed fact about Aussie gun laws: It is perfectly possible to kill 17 people in 3 minutes with each and every one of the modern firearms still legal in Oz.
We did - we decided we had had enough of gun violence. Port Arthur was just the last straw. You do realise do you not that before Port Arthur we had around 13 mass shootings in 18 years - since then ONE in over 20 years We do not miss the guns We LIKE that we can walk outside without strapping on a gun We can go to the shops without strapping on a gun We can sleep at night without having a gun constantly at the bedside We can rest assured our chidren are not harming themselves and others by picking up guns that have been left lying around We have a good national health scheme that has strong mental health supports And if you had read the article they were talking about firearms seized - that is people fined and jailed BEFORE they commit a crime Sounds like a win to me!!!
IF the crooks could afford $20,000 they would not have to be crooks!! Big question - is your average nutballl out to commit a mass shooting going to fork over $20,000????
BULLSHIT They RAISED the levy for ONE year to pay for a one off buy back - then the levy went back to the normal rate Now just in my small town - which is rural and very remote out mental health services include a mental health team, ATODS (drugs and alcohol) plus a HOT team (Homeless outreach) as well as public funding for General Practitioners and other support services - all free to the consumer So - what else would you like for mental health?
Hmmmmmm And they are coming from America That is right there is a thriving industry smuggling guns out of America
Did they not raise the levy for gun buys for that one year? What else could have been done with that money?
