One of the earliest was "Soap" with "Jodie" (who was incidentally the most normal character in the show!) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vudJivvHWqI&feature=related"]SOAP - When we were younger, there were no such things as homosexuals - YouTube[/ame]
Well, there are gay characters, gay actors, gay subtext, and then perhaps the most nebulous - "gay sensibility" and "gay adjacent". How to define the last two? I suppose you could define "gay sensibility" as something that 'speaks' to a gay person without really being gay, and is likely to go unnoticed by heterosexuals as having any relation at all to gayness. Gay adjacent would be something connected to "gay culture", such as the divas that some gay men obsess over, without being gay itself. Here's a hint - if you don't get the last two, then realize that you're probably not meant to and move on. I'm not even going to try to deal with them here, but thought they might be worth a mention nonetheless. Same for gay subtext, as it's very debatable what is or isn't subtext, since it involves 'reading between the lines'. Where one person perceives subtext to exist, another may not. Personally, I don't want to have to analyze my entertainment that much. Another note - an actor is not the character they portray. So I'm going to skip shows with gay actors whose character is defined as straight or whose sexuality is undefined. Don't even get me started on the practice of speculating about the orientation of actors who aren't out - and who may not actually be gay. Suffice it to say - not a fan. So pared down to the actual subject - shows with gay characters. By which I mean clearly defined as gay. Here's some that come to mind, but not necessarily favorites: Happy Endings (Wednesdays at 10:00 pm. An ensemble cast, features a gay character named Max) Eureka (SyFy, in it's final year. Currently on hiatus, not sure when it starts up again. Vincent - the guy who runs Cafe Diem) Warehouse 13 (SyFy, currently on hiatus, not sure when it starts up again. Steve Jinks - introduced this season - but looks like they may already be writing him out of the show?) Stargate Universe (SyFy. Some lesbian couple. We only briefly watched this show) Caprica (SyFy. Sam, a hit man for the rough equivalent of the mafia. Don't remember his partner's name) Greek (Gay frat boy Calvin. He also had a boyfriend the last season) Brothers & Sisters (Kevin & Scotty are a gay couple) Six Feet Under (David & Keith are a gay couple) Dawson's Creek (Jack McPhee) Happily Divorced (Peter, the ex-husband) Absolutely Fabulous (one of Eddy's ex-husbands) Rick & Steve, The Happiest Gay Couple in the World (animated. Several characters) Drawn Together (animated. Xandir) Queer Duck (animated. Several characters) South Park (animated. Big Gay Al, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Slave) The Simpsons (animated. Has featured gay characters as one-offs many times, and also has the recurring, closeted character of Waylon Smithers) Reality/Sketch shows: Tops & Bottoms (on Here) Project Runway (Bravo, Lifetime) The Big Gay Sketch Show (on Logo) Face Off (the first season on SyFy. The show returns next Wednesday at 10:00 pm, no idea if there will be any gay contestants this time around) Ghost Hunters (Adam Berry) Boy Meets Boy (think the Bachelor, but gay) Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (5 gay guys give makeovers to a straight guy.) The Amazing Race (has regularly featured gay contestants) and of course: The Real World As for movies - too many to name.
Best answer yet. That would be lame. It would totally contradict why he became a player in the first place when he was a sensitive little hippie wuss and his girlfriend left him for a smooth talking guy in a suit. I always thought that was a great background story.

Modern Family is probably my favorite. At least of those who give the gay characters leading roles. They're really funny & mess up along the way just like everyone else, but at the end of the day you can see that they are good parents just trying to raise their daughter right. Even though the show is fiction, that will speak to a lot of people who are unsure when it comes to gay rights.
1. Its spelled Character not charactor. Unless this is some witty play on words which is just gay. (get it?) 2. This is not a civil rights issue and should not be in this thread. I'm sorry, but just because it has something do with gay people doesn't make it about civil rights. Sorry. How gay people are portrayed in fictional television shows is not a civil rights issue. To claim that it is would be so overwhelmingly aggrandizing of this community as to make one ill. Gay people's portrayal in television shows is no more relevant to civil rights than straight ones. Should we also start a thread about everyone's favorite straight characters? 3. My favorite is Modern Family. I like Mitchell a lot. He is probably my favorite. Cam is hysterical, as well. They are funny duo a nice pair.
I can't wait to see "The New Normal" about a young sucessful gay couple in California who ask a run-away single mom to be their surrogate, and she agrees in order to fund putting herself through law school, but her Republican racist/homophobic mother flies out there to bring her home and hilarity ensues. >_>
