    is not becomes isn't
    it is becomes 'tis
    you are becomes you're
your is something that is yours
    you have becomes you've
    you could becomes you'd
    could not becomes couldn't
    could have could've
'couldn't have Vs. could've had' this is all to do with past tense and whatnot.

English, my kind of language, lest there longer words when broken ones'd do.

I hear you..I too am not college educated...However I am a CNC machinist, manual machinist, and welder which is why I currently work in the defense industry as a tool and die maker, prototype engineer. With overtime and bonuses I easily make 6 figures. And I know I will never lack for a job.

I have had interns come thru my area, most are engineering students, and the term "college educated idiot" is an apt description...These kids do not believe that showing up on time is important, frequently showing up 5-20 minutes late. Can't do simple math in their heads and can't seem to do it without a calculator or their phones. You see some of the stuff I work on is secretive, meaning no cameras allowed, no cell phones or other electronics. They seem to have a problem with taking direction from someone that they deem uneducated...I have only one intern that has lasted the whole summer, most don't last three weeks.

Computers and calculators make people stupid. Lol..lol... They make your brain Lazy. Although I am a little hypocritical when doing some trigonometry a nice Texas Instrument calculator can save you hours. :juggle:

Long ago I went through a couple of long electronics courses. During both courses I did all the math by hand. And I chose to go without a calculator because I needed to improve my knowledge and understanding of the math involved. Sometimes a problem would take me five pages of scribbling to arrive at an answer.

In the last month, I bought a scientific calculator and could get an answer instantly. But, by then, I understood the entire process. On our finals, I scored the second highest final exam score in the history of one of the classes. It was worth it to me, to do it the hard way, because, in the end, I understood and remembered more of what I studied.

Yeah, that's kind a my point calculators and computers make the brain go a little lazy. In my engineering class we had a lot of math and our teacher would NOT allow us to have calculators for many excersices. (i.e.) The B.T.U. factor. Brittish Thermal Unit we had to do my memory. Took me about 4 pages to find the sum of the question.

when I re-took calculus the use of my scientific calculator to perform complicated equations made me feel more intelligent.

My engineering teacher was really cool. When he was teaching us how to perform equations we were not allowed to use calculators but when we took tests or final exams he would allows calculators. Probably to save time. Without a calculator for tests heck I'd it would of took days to finish the exam. lol..lol..

We usually acquire the language skills of our parents. If would-be parents don't have good language skills, they should make it their business to acquire them before they start impacting their kids (by limiting their access to 'English' or whatever). Why compromise your child's ability to move in any circles they need or want to move in? Seems crazy, to me.

We went out of our way to use big and complex words often, and with 'posh' pronunciation and accents etc, when our kids were small. Far far better to equip them for the top end, which allows them to move freely down - than to equip them only for the bottom, with no hope of going up. The posh doctor can talk easily to the trash collector, but the trash collector can't easily talk to the posh doctor. Even if your kid is a trash collector, better for him/her to have the ability to communicate with anyone.

Understanding the concepts behind math is what stymies a lot of people. I remember bumping into a freshman at the supermarket whose parents I had known before they moved away. Apparently there were now divorced and he was just starting in the local HS without knowing anyone.

I asked him how he was doing and he mentioned that he was struggling with his math homework and asked if I could tutor him. I said sure and asked him what he was having a problem with now. He said that it was Algebra and the equations were difficult to understand. I pointed out to him that A + B and C x D was just the simple arithmetic that he had learned in elementary school so he should just ignore the easy stuff and focus on the bigger problem instead.

He never turned up for tutoring and when I saw him again a couple of weeks later I asked him if he still needed help. He said that what I had said to him made him look at math in a whole new way and now he was acing the class.

Some times it is just the little things that get in the way and seem insurmountable until they put into perspective.

A chimpanzee can be taught to splice wires. Language is what separates us from the animals. There are numerous examples in nature of animals using tools, yet none of them write poetry...

Honnestly, people who don't think to be the big boss of the world like you are far better than a lot of people. Realizing you're not as smart as you thought is a proof of smartness a lot of people will never get.

I wrote a piece of poetry while peeling a banana with my feet. I posted it on the forum but it got removed by one of the MODs.
I used a few symbols to disguise a couple curse words. .. :icon_picknose:

Anyone who is separated from the animals by launguage alone isn't much of a person.

Yeah, I saw that spooge and reported it. A chimp coulda done better.

Don't listen to the spellcheck people. It's a crutch.

All you have to do is read is a lot and you start picking things up.

The most important word to get down is "covfefe".
