She shot the dog because it attacked her. When an animal attacks a person oftentimes it's an order of the Court that it be destroyed.

This was a rural setting where veterinary services may not be that fast available and giving a dog an instant kill it's probably more humane than locking it up in a kennel until that is able to come and euthanize it.
