Why is it apparently so difficult a notion for otherwise intelligent posters like Margot to grasp that Libyan's, Iraqi's, Saudi's and this case Syrian's, are able to determine their own destinies free from the external meddling of outsiders?
If you read only the Western press- encouraged by its Arab League collaborators- Syria is afire with mass popular revolt and only Assad and the army, cut-throats to a man- stand between them and Coco Cola heaven. The reality is that Assad has widespread support and his is the legitimate government. Why don't the ' revolutionaries ' want an election in May ?
Absolutely correct. It's the old 'with us, or against us' false dichotomy mentality. Either you are pro-Assad and therefore anti-democracy by default, or you are some kind of commie or whatever. Pro-Zionist/US of AIPAC wingnuts are confused when you tell them you are neither one or the other but rather pro-democracy and therefore anti-Zionist. They just cannot grasp it at all.
What? Who wants to interfer???? In an interview with Barbara Walters, Assad said they would have parliamentary elections in May.. and presidential elections in 2014 with party candidates.. and he will step down if he is not reelected.
Bashar Al-Assad is the offical leader his position is of one of power not of approval of his people And for the bigot handgrenades you like too thru eff that everything is based off of race, religion, tribe, region,or whatever That is racists in that context when u obesses over these identities of collective politics Try look at it as individuals with the right too determine who is gonna determine who is gonna run syria I don't disagree with the agitators they all have an agenda, an I don't approve period
Your 'what the hell are the Syrian's going to vote on' comment perplexed me. As moon said, they will vote on the basis that everybody else does. Why do you apparently think that the Syrian people are any different to anybody else? Sometimes Margot your paternalistic instincts get the better of you and as a consequence you make some daft comments.
Sadly, many people fall for the Western mainstream media propaganda which is reinforced by the so-called 'intelligent' media of the broadsheets. The only way to discern the truth is through alternative internet sources like Juan Cole or Craig Murray, for example.
You seem to be easily duped by Russia's own paranoid fears. The West and the United States don't really care much for Russia. They aren't a threat anymore. The United States is simply maintaining its presence around the world like any other leading power would. The Russians are just bitter that they lost the Cold War. Its only natural they would still hold a grudge. The same is true for many Southerners here in the United States. Putin plays into their anger by flexing his muscles whenever he can. The Russians love it when he can (*)(*)(*)(*) of the United States. Therefore Putin's decision to intervene in Syria is purely political and has nothing to do with protecting democracy or those who are being victimized by the violence. And it has been well documented that the people being killed by Assad's military are innocent people. They started as peaceful protestors but have now chosen to arm themselves since it is clear Assad won't step down from power willingly. I don't know who you're sources are that are sayingg otherwise, but either you are trolling me or you are easily fooled by Syrian propaganda.
I have a vague idea that there is something which meets your disapproval but no idea what it might be. I am minded of playing Scrabble with Guantanamo George.
Oh, and the above is worth repeating because rarely has a more lucid, truthful and cogent analysis been made.
There will probably be 99% turnout in which 99% of people vote for Assad. (That's how rigged elections generally work, right?)
I would go with that or something similar. I mean he has not spent his time killing all those people so he can be voted out in a free and fair election.
By the same token, all those who have contributed money and armaments to overthrow the Syrian government by violent means are not going to see it all go to waste by allowing any election to be peaceful, free or fair. Do MOSSAD and the CIA seem like democratic institutions to you ?
Intelligence services do not govern. More importantly the CIA does not handle domestic affairs and is primarily responsible for GATHERING information. Carrying out clandestine operations is not a big part of what they do.
What money and armaments? All they have is a few rifles. The CIA wouldnt waste its money like that. If it was supplying them youd know all about it. Because the weapons would be winning the battlefield.
I was under the impression that Israel liked the Syrian government, not as friends mind you but they know what they are getting. What they do not want is some form of Islamists to take over the country so I cannot really see them funding the rebels. I doubt the CIA are either as they would have learned from other events in the middle east/North Africa that Islamist parties would probably win any election there and would not be friends with America and be more of a threat to Israel. You constant defence of Assad is very sad. I would not defend a guy who clearly is ordering the murders of his own people just like his dad.
I doubt there is much worry of an extreme group taking over Syria if/when Assad is thrown out of power. Most of the country is Sunni, and if the mobs of Syria have their way, I'd be willing to bet they will establish a government that is more friendly to other countries such as Saudi Arabia.
Time will tell huh Look how great that lil thing went in egypt an libya Back fired rite in the. Masterminds faces
You aren't aware of the accepted CIA involvement in the drone program. Yet here you are implying that the CIA are not involved . Sort out your priorities, god or Disney.
