Well, at least one group in this country is promoting reality over myths, cults, and superstitions.

It seems the billboard camping against such silly and outdated notions as invisible beings who created and control everything marches on. Over the last few years we have seen thought making inroads to such places as the midwest and New York. Billboards inviting folks to think are popping up all across the country.

Now as the number of non theists continues to rise int he US, is it safe to say that eventually we can hope that these silly myths stop trying to force their way into our government? Stop trying to legislate their form of morality upon us all?

I, for one, certainly applaud the growing prominence of folks who embrace thought over the superstitions that have haunted this planet since the beginning of recorded history.

A large new atheist billboard has been unveiled along a San Diego freeway, the result of co-operative work of over 18 atheist and secular groups, which reads "Atheism: A Personal Relationship with Reality."

"We want to express how using intelligence to free oneself of the god idea can open the curtain to a inspiring new outlook," said Debbie Allen, coordinator for the San Diego Coalition of Reason, in a statement. "Atheism is positive and offers grounding in the real world."

Eighteen or so atheist groups besides the Coalition of Reason helped American Atheists, the largest atheist organization in America, keep the $4,000 billboard up for the next four weeks. The billboard features a curtain with a painting of a sky exposing a stack of books, and was designed by graphic artist Bruce Harris for the San Diego Coalition of Reason.

"When you raise the curtain between the known and the unknown, there is nothing there but the natural world. No wizards, no spirits, no deities," Allen explained.

The effort, part of an ongoing nationwide campaigning of both American Atheists and the United Coalition of Reason, seeks to place atheist-minded billboards across a number of major U.S. cities. This past Christmas, AA launched a massive billboard in the popular tourist spot Times Square in New York City, which urged people to abandon the "myth" of Jesus Christ.

David Silverman, president of AA, said in a statement: "With many of our previous billboards, we've made it a point to challenge traditional religion. But this time we want to show the other side of our coin, that atheism is a breath of fresh air."

Really? Boy that sure is awesome....

Hey, Isnt Communist China a nation of atheists?

    What about communist Russia?

State promotion of atheism as a public norm was first practiced during a brief period in Revolutionary France. Since then, such a policy was repeated only in Revolutionary Mexico and some communist states. The Soviet Union had a long history of state atheism, in which social success largely required individuals to profess atheism and stay away from houses of worship; this attitude was especially militant during the middle Stalinist era from 1929–1939. The Soviet Union attempted to suppress public religious expression over wide areas of its influence, including places such as central Asia.

    Oh that cant be good....

    What about North Korea?

North Korea's government exercises virtual total control over society and imposes the cult of personality of Kim Jung Il and Kim Il Sung, described as a political religion. Their ideology has been described as "state-sanctioned atheism".[79] Although the North Korean constitution states that freedom of religion is permitted,[80] free religious activities no longer exist in North Korea, as the government sponsors religious groups only to create an illusion of religious freedom.

    Whoa... That cant be good....

    Hey what about Cuba??

Originally more tolerant of religion, Cuba began arresting many believers and shutting down religious schools after the Bay of Pigs Invasion, its prisons since the 1960s being filled with clergy.[49] In 1961 The Cuban government confiscated Catholic schools, including the Jesuit school Fidel Castro had attended. In 1965 it exiled two hundred priests.[50]

The Communist Party of Cuba defines one of its aims as "the gradual overcoming of religious beliefs by materialistic scientific propaganda and the cultural advancement of the workers."[43] From 1976 to 1992, the Constitution of Cuba contained a clause stating that the "socialist state...bases its activity on, and educates the people in, the scientific materialist concept of the universe".

Hmmm.... There seems to be a patter developing here....

    Albania
Main article: Religion in Albania#Communist Albania

State atheism in Albania was taken to an extreme during the totalitarian regime installed after World War II, when religions, identified as imports foreign to Albanian culture, were banned altogether.[29] The Agrarian Reform Law of August 1945 nationalized most property of religious institutions, including the estates of monasteries, orders, and dioceses. Many clergy and believers were tried, tortured, and executed. All foreign Roman Catholic priests, monks, and nuns were expelled in 1946.[30]

Religious communities or branches that had their headquarters outside the country, such as the Jesuit and Franciscan orders, were henceforth ordered to terminate their activities in Albania. Religious institutions were forbidden to have anything to do with the education of the young, because that had been made the exclusive province of the state. All religious communities were prohibited from owning real estate and from operating philanthropic and welfare institutions and hospitals. Although there were tactical variations in Enver Hoxha's approach to each of the major denominations, his overarching objective was the eventual destruction of all organized religion in Albania. Between 1945 and 1953, the number of priests was reduced drastically and the number of Roman Catholic churches was decreased from 253 to 100, and all Catholics were stigmatized as fascists.[30]

The campaign against religion peaked in the 1960s. Beginning in 1967 the Albanian authorities began a violent campaign to try to eliminate religious life in Albania. Despite complaints, even by APL members, all churches, mosques, monasteries, and other religious institutions were either closed down or converted into warehouses, gymnasiums, or workshops by the end of 1967.[31] By May 1967, religious institutions had been forced to relinquish all 2,169 churches, mosques, cloisters, and shrines in Albania, many of which were converted into cultural centers for young people. As the literary monthly Nendori reported the event, the youth had thus "created the first atheist nation in the world.

Commies and Atheists..... Hmmm.... Kinda makes you wonder huh?

Is it cause commies need to kill god, in order to rule in his stead? Can communism exist if the people believe their human rights come from God, and not the government? I think not....

What do all these commie countries have in common?

    Lets find out...

What a novel concept. Kudos to the folks funding the billboard. If one person wakes up and smells the reality, who knows what they might accomplish.

If Atheism is supposed to be so positive, then why are its proponents trying to make such insulting billboards and forum threads?

Until you can tell me who figured out where the universe came from, you have no "reality" to preach to me.

And why would people spend money on billboards?? Are they expecting religious people to be driving full speed to church, then see the billboard and be like, oh wait, nevermind, the billboard says I'm wrong, and then throw their bible out the window?

Yes, atheists are very bad, religious society is way much better. Just look at Iran and Saudi Arabia - those are beacons of religious freedom ....

Your hateful generalization is just as (*)(*)(*)(*) as the thread topic.

Why can't people just believe WTF they want, and leave others to do the same, in peace?

People aren't lesser, or stupider, just because they believe something different than you.

And the USSR was a beacon of freedom, as well.

Extremism tends to produce negative results, whether it be of the secular or religious variety...

I "like" how that's not what they're doing.

Let's be honest here. They're attacking religion, and that's what upsets the religious.

Wait a second, are you saying that religiousness of the country is not a factor in how tyrannical government regime is?

I said that the irreligious can be just as tyrannical as the religious. That's an indisputable fact.
