C.J Pascoe wrote a book called "Dude, You're a (*)(*)(*)" that addressed this. She spent time at a high school observing the behavior of boys and seeing the way they treated the gay students. The masculine gay guys were mostly left alone, either because they were perceived as straight or people knew not to make fun of them. The feminine gay boys, however, were relentlessly harassed and bullied for the way they were.

Most progressive types like to pretend a lot of things don't exist...

No one is denying that Men and Women are different. All we're saying is that children shouldn't be shoved into gender roles.

Did it ever occur to you that gender roles might actually serve an important purpose?

Not if it's at the expense of those who don't fit into them.

Not to worry. Babies (lots of them) will continue to be born... and some of those babies will turn out to be 'gay' or straight. Life will go on.

Gender roles certainly can/will serve some purpose... but it isn't necessary to do the brainwashing/conditioning that many ignorant homophobes espouse.

Such as? And more importantly, if there are important gender roles, is it important that those roles be tied specifically to a penis or vagina?

Society has changed dramatically over time, in the way we treat races, gender, in the basic way we live our lives as a result of technological and cultural changes... If humans can survive the invention of the computer, the car, fire and the internet, then I have faith that an inadherence to strict gender roles hardly harkens the end of society. For a society that wishes to embrace individuality and the pursuit of happiness, it's interesting how much people like to enforce on others their own notions of happiness.

Typical, the .01% demand the 99.99% to adjust to their needs.

??? You think 0.01% of society are the only people who don't conform to sterotypical gender roles?

Many heterosexual guys I know don't enjoy traditionally manly things, and enjoy "feminine" things like shaving/waxing their bodies, beauty treatments, ect. The point is there is no one size fits all, and traditional gender roles depend on social perceptions. What's inherently masculine about short hair? What's inherently feminine about wearing makeup?

Guyliner and guy foundation/concealer is reasonably popular now, you're just a 50 year old fart who doesn't get it Dixon ;)

No one is forcing anybody to be gender neutral. All we're asking is that you respect gender atypical people that you meet in public.

A society that believes heavily in traditional gender roles is likely to shun or outcast men and women who don't conform to those roles. So yes, a guy wearing eyeliner is looked down upon in such a society, or a guy with long, feminine hair.

Soooo you expect the 99.whatever % to eliminate gender roles because it's at the expense of the guys who wear eyeliner?

Did I say that I wanted to eliminate those who follow traditional gender roles? Cause I don't think I did.

No one is saying that. But we shouldn't be so obsessed as a society with ensuring everyone acts the same. Diversity and individuality should be celebrated.

Many guys are born naturally "feminine" for biological or hormonal reasons. Is it fair for a father to constantly hassle his son to be "like him" and get angry if he refuses to conform to traditionally masculine roles? Would that be at the expense of the "99.9%"?

What could possibly at the detriment of the majority when it comes to accepting people as they are?

I don't see guys who have their junk removed and breasts installed so they can spend their lives conforming to the female gender role as a celebration of diversity. More of a pathetic attempt at conformity

I would argue post-op transsexuals aren't trying to "conform" per se, they simply feel the outer shell doesn't reflect the inner reality - indeed many are seemingly born with a predisposed tendency towards traits we usually associate with the female sex. The reasons could well be hormonal - a natural lack of testosterone in males for example. If they feel greater comfort in adopting the appearance of the sex they feel they should have been, so what? It's still very much an expression of individuality.

You nailed it!! There have ALWAYS been those certain painfully closed-minded folk who don't ANYTHING outside of the lines they draw or themselves live within.

In trying to force/cause others to 'conform' (to their expectations/demands), they simply generate A LOT OF PROBLEMS for everyone. I feel VERY sad for the child whose parents seek to overly-mold them (brainwash) into some 'image' they desire.

Seems what you label as the outer shell is in fact the gender role we are speaking of.

No one said or implied that you did. You imagined that part. Or your crafting strawman to chase after

I do to, which is why I'm against gender neutral and transgender parenting.

    - - - Updated - - -

They're based on the different wirings of the male/female brain moreso than social perceptions - which is why they've been quite similar for 1000s of years, across many different cultures.

They coincide best with male brain wiring.

Thankfully I know of no (straight) male who's even heard of "guyliner", let alone worn it.

Fitting in is a choice, it's not at their 'expense' if they choose to whine about how 'persecuted' they are just because the majority won't socially engineer themselves to cater to the minority.
