I don't see any mention of businesses being destroyed or Seattle being rocked. Sounds more like a party that got a bit out of hand. Is there a tad of hyperbole at work here?

Spoken like a true drunken Kiwi, without property damage, tear gas, and a riot-like conditions, its simply not a party! Awesome!

If these people were actually 'workers' seeking better working conditions, why weren't they at work proving they actually deserve better conditions? Taking to the streets to whine and riot really doesn't seem to convey the message behind May Day...

Wouldnt these young people also try to stir up this kind of violence at a tea part rally too? Since the TEA party was also against all the government spending, and are large crowds, why wont these kids start trouble in one of the TEA party events but only do it at pro-communist events?

Who says a May Day rally is a communist event? If MayDay is a holiday in communist countries that's up to them. In the U.S.A. May 1st was the original Labor Day, before that holiday was moved to September.

May 1st was originally a labor rally here in America. The rest of the world didn't celebrate it until after we shifted to September.

But to call a May Day celebration (even if it did get out of hand) a pro-communist event is boggling.

That's right. Workers are supposed to walk up to the window , hats in hand, and be happy with whatever wage management decides to dole out.

    Screw that!

When you get fed up with working in a system so heavily loaded in favor of the owner class that you see no future for yourself and family, it's time to tilt the system.

After our gutless generation fades from power, maybe our grand kids will fight and win back those things our grand fathers fought for and won.

Probably because it is not labor day, and the OWS communist movement adopted it, and get together... and commit violence. This is why this doesn't happen on labor day. They were there committing violence last year too... which is why the police presence was what it was.

What is the OWS communist movement? With what communist party are they affiliated?

The Occupy Wall Street movement is not communist. It is people protesting the control of our government by the economic elite.

Do you have better info I should know about?

You can walk up to the window, or you can keep walking, doesn't really matter, someone will do your job if you don't want it...

Improve your market value, don't blame those that already have...

What OWS was protesting for was more free stuff. Every time they were interviewed it was like talking to someone who was stoned and just wanted free stuff. Free education. Guaranteed job. "Living wage". Communist free stuff.

And if the person lacks the time, money, or other things required to improve their market value, or even if they have it and simply choose not to do it, you expect them to roll over and willingly die?

    Are you serious?

I am not sure exactly where to start...

What is your understanding of the OWS movement?

I will also require a BRIEF explanation of your concept of communism.

We all live under the indeterminance of time. What one does with that time is the issue. Don't get me wrong... heroin has not hurt my music collection... but it has done little for science. Money is a concept.

Well, yes. What you spend your time on can be an issue.

However, I work 40 hours my job right now. And because I have to bus to and from work, that another three hours a day gone. I spend a lot of my spare time helping my two sister with babysitting their children, which are to young to be allowed to stay at home alone.

With what little spare time I have, it would take many years for me to get a degree in any field that would pay well, and then of course I will still need the money to purchase that college education or trade school. Money I do not have.

I live paycheck to paycheck as it is.

Kudos to you, but only so far. With the internet, anyone can improve themselves by taking on-line courses. Anyone can improve themselves by working hard at what they do, and then seeking advancement with others if your current employment will not advance you.

OBTW, helping your two sisters with their children ? What are their husbands doing ? If you need to take some night training courses, maybe the daddies can take over ?

Learn a few programming languages. Follow math to logic... then delve into differing divinations. If you are logical... you will be employed. The end. How you express that logic will define your pay scale.

Online courses still require money, which I have a severe lack of these days, what with the rising cost of living and the very minor raises I get. The raises I get do not keep up with those rising costs.

As far as my current job, I am working on advancement. However, I have not yet been able to be promoted. Not too many positions opening up right now. And because I bus to/from work, I cannot accept positions that require me to work the hours that I cannot get to or from work.

Actually, both the mom and dad are working, that is the primary reason I help to watch the kids in my spare time. I work four ten hour shifts a day, so I babysit the children on my days off, which are the days my family works. Which is the main reason we arranged our schedules like we did. Childcare can be quite expensive, after all.

Nice link, I'll explore it later.

However, I am pretty sure most businesses, especially large ones, require a actual degree from a credited source. Does this source qualify?

As a degree? Absolutely not. However several of the upper echelon of business owners have no degree. This is based on actually educating you. Knowing wtf you are talking about in an interview matters. Solving problems thrown at you in the post interview matter. Being good at what you do is all that matters really. I have a degree in film and in music. Nothing I do has anything to do with my education. Very few I deal with were not self educated... but I am in the upper echelon of what I do.

Well, to be reliant on public transportation, instead of having a car, is a huge handicap in many places. I don't want a history of why you don't have a car, or even such as a scooter, but making the needed efforts to acquire one early in one's work career should be the priority.

If you are living at home, you have no excuse to not be saving money. If you are supporting the largesse and mistakes of others, then you will always be taken advantage of. Somebody had kids that they could not afford. And look at what you have let it do to you.

Yeah, I'm not saying I haven't made mistakes in my life. I certainly have. Doesn't change the situation I am in though.

Saving money for a degree will have to wait. You see, when I lost my last job about a year and a half ago, I was not able to find a job and start it for about six months. During that time, it was my sister that covered my share of the bills. So needless to say, I still owe her about 3500.00 dollars. Considering the costs, it will take quite a while for me to pay this back.

And I am sorry, but family is extremley important to me. I love my family dearly. I would be very hearbroken if I had to cut them from my life because of mistakes they made. I help them, and they help me. That is how a family is supposed to work, right?

Well, good luck with all. You owe your sister. Make yourself as valuable as you can, even if its just by being more dependable than the other guy who is still making mistakes.

Thank you, I am already doing the best I can.

I admit though, the company I work for makes many decisions that I do not morally agree with.

Such as mandatory overtime, changing my schedule with very little to no notice, cutting my hours when we are actually quiet, etc.

I wonder, would anyone care to address that? Or is the business always right?

Not a question that matters. What does matter is that you train and motivate yourself to meet and exceed their expectations. Not to make them better, which it will, but to make yourself better. Then you sell that self-discipline, your value, to other potential employers.

You make yourself a most profitable commodity within your current niche. You make yourself more profitable to a business than other folks vying for the same spot. But don't burn bridges as you try to advance. Success will not be overnight. Good luck with all.

Your company, whether you get it or not, is making changes in an evolving market to keep you and your compatriots involved. You are under no gun to work overtime... you are not being underpaid for your overtime. Your company is predicting income based on need. Greenhouses don't make much money in the winter... but they must still sustain their goods throughout the seasons. Morality has (*)(*)(*)(*) all to do with it. You have a job because of this management. You have employment throughout the seasons.

Your desire for steady pay has absolutely no bearing on the businesses busy times. Schools should not get more funding to provide income over summer... when there are no children. That is how business works.

I may not be under a literal gun, but I have situations where my employers have simply added the extra hours above 40 to my schedule without my permission as well as them threatening to write me up for not working overtime. When my only choices are to capitulate or be fired, it's not a real choice.

And yes, I understand a business is all about making profit. However, just because I have to work for them to make money to survive, does not mean I agree with them morally.

If all we do is put company profit ahead of anything else, we employees will lose. They will work us to the bone until we break, and then dump and replace us. And if they can be greedy, well, so can I.
