Since we are in recess, I will play devil's advocate on why the Judge was asking GZ if he was going to testify before the Defense rested.

My theory is that she was contemplating whether to allow testimony about TM's fighting abilities. By law, if the State questions GZ's character issues, this will open the door for the Defense to bring up TM's character issues. If GZ was going to testify, the Judge probably thought that there would be no avoiding GZ's character issues and therefore would allow questions about TM's fighting abilities.

Could be wrong though....either way, it was highly irregular.
