They're changed the cycle from every 600,000 yrs and is 'over due' (last I heard several yrs ago after recent recorded dome growth affecting the surface), now to 40,000 more years..was that done to stymie any panic as sitting on a ticking time bomb?!

there have been bigger eruptions in human history, Toba 70K yrs ago had an estimated ejected volume 3 times the last Yellowstone eruption...still even a third of Toba's volume is likely enough to destroy our civilization as we know it...looking further into Yellowstone eruptions they're not all explosive some are of the slow flow type...

yeah I but looking into yellowstone I read there was a major lava flow 70K yrs ago and an eruption 150K yrs ago...

there's no point in worrying ourselves about it there is nothing we can do to prevent it or survive it...

yup, there is no amount of water we could pump into it that would have any effect...we could probably create a lot of energy however....

overdue in geological terms is subjective...40k or 100K is nothing...

You mean like man-caused Global Climate Change as a short-term, and accelerating impending doom?

Obviously, not enuf groups have gotten together to milk the Govt for funding programs for further study of the sinister super-volcano in Yellowstone, such as has been done with Global Climate Change, so as to create a panic!

And the certainty of another eruption or lava flow in Yellowstone is only a matter of time' whereas the Global Climate Change possibility and time frame is wavering as the data is being updated.

Bottom line, is that we need another PANIC and something else to worry about, and as a result, more programs to suck more tax payer's $$$.......

Pumping water into a Volcano will cause it to ERUPT EXPLOSIVELY!!!

    Please....no more bad ideas.

Such as melting glaciers & ice caps are temporary 'plugs' that result in explosive demonstrations..

Actually they result in a lot of blue FEMA roof covers.

Have you been watching Iron Sky again?

My understanding is there are no mass extinctions that coincided with supervolcano eruptions, though it is theorized that either the Deccan or Siberian Traps may have caused one of the mass extinctions. However, those were not super volcanos but rather fissures thousands of kilometres long, much bigger than any single eruption and lasting over thousands, possibly millions, of years.

Nobody has ever demonstrated that, you are stating your opinion as a fact.

For those who didnt notice btw, Yellowstone is not a lava-type volcano, its high silica magma of the sort that gives an ash and pyroclastic flow type eruption.

Still....there is this large lake in Yellowstone and due to a caldera shift the entire lake tilted a few degrees causing the water to flood an area of forest that previously had been 4 to 6 feet higher than the water line.

That was on some check out stand newspaper like The Globe, the B17 story.

Yes on the comments about extinctions, Siberian traps.

But what caused the mass extinction at the end of the Pleistocene, we wonder.

    No...this is a fact.

When water meets magma...it becomes steam and erupts explosively.

On a smaller scale we call these Geysers.

It was the Sunday Sport, and I am sad to say I recall seeing the newspaper at the time. They had a follow up story a week later "Survivors found"

Is this a good enough demonstration?

I have read about Krakatoa! But nobody set it off with a fire hose.

Look at satellite photo of Taal, just south of Manila. Another big player.

Changing your story big time there, pard.

The first explosion on August 27th is believed to have cracked the magma chamber under the island. The subsequent 3 explosions were all phreatomagmatic caused by sea water rushing in and being flash boiled. Similar to how a litre of water can destroy an aluminium smelter

    How do you figure?

If you have a Volcano....and you somehow are able to pump Millions of Gallons of water into it....the heat will super heat the water to steam and the steam will expand and erupt explosively any way it can.

The hydrosphere — the liquid water on and under the Earth's surface — can make volcanic eruptions more dangerous.

In English this means that "it" is a volcano (not "Volcano") and that the volcano is what will erupt.

Interesting! I will read about that.

Thank you for one of my favorite B-movie references!

For ages when I was little I had that image of a nuke being launched into the center of the planet...

Besides all the outrageous on-screen text, I like the verbal line, "their deadly gamble to save the UNIVERSE!"
