Michael Sam has become the first openly gay player drafted into the National Football League.

With the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams made history and selected Sam.

Sam was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Missouri.

Sam came out as gay in media interviews earlier this year. His team and coaches knew his secret and kept it for his final college season.

Good luck to him. There have been some pretty negative things said about his abilities by the scouts but I hope all feelings go into account when it comes to his team mates.

I guess there goes the conspiracy that he came out to up his stock eh? Some people here were VERY vocal about it. He was projected as a mid round pick before he came out.

Doubtful he already has a lot of competition on the team and 7th round picks have no guarented money

Ah my bad. Ok how about Rammin Sammy?

As one commentator on ESPN's website said its probably best he wasn't picked up by the Packers. That would have been unfortunate.

You mean back when Ole Miss wasn't winning anything. Come to think of it, they still aren't winning anything.

The Rams, the hometown team of the same state where he played college, spent a 7th round pick on a guy who plays the same position as several other stud DE's. They didn't need a DE, they did it because he wasn't going to be drafted by anyone.

Then one Dolphins player tweets out 'OMG horrible' and is being reprimanded. It seems you can't formulate an opinion about a player if he is gay.

The best part was watching him mooch with his little white boyfriend when he was drafted. Icing on the cake. :roflol:

Of course you can. And then you can man up and deal with the consequences of being a troglodyte.

Rams are studs on defense. Great job beefing up that O'line. Hopefully they can beat the Seahawks this year.

Yep. Drafted a guy they had no need for. Same reason Jason Collins got a contract. Had nothing to do with his ability, and honestly, if he hadn't come out nobody would have picked him up.

Punished for thinking differently. Do that in North Korea and they feed you to dogs.

There is no such thing as free speech. You're free to say whatever you want but if your opinion isn't the right one, prepare to suffer the constant barrage of 'racist' 'homophobe' and your career put in jeopardy. Free speech is a myth if your opinion isn't in line with what the most vocal portion of our society agrees with.

Are you in the Rams front office? If not then how do you know what they have a need for?

Yea, it's embarrassing a 7th round pick is getting this attention. The rams did it just because his following at Mizzou. They might keep him on the roster and let him play couple mop up plays like Rudy. Sickening

He came out as gay before the draft because he was going to be outed anyway. Teams really do their homework these days, given the money they are spending, and they either knew or would've found out. He came out on more or less on his own terms and timing which also benefited teams to the extent they were able to gauge league and player reaction and figure out how much, if any, a distraction he would be. No conspiracy and no (un)favourable treatment and he was drafted right about where he would've been if he were straight. Teams make draft choices that the average fan doesn't understand all the time (See: Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins in recent years).

HtownMarine, I played 1st division college ball (linebacker), had a pro tryout (didn't make it) and I can in all confidence say that aside from your homophobia (projection?) you have no idea what you are talking about. None. Zilch. But you did predictably insert a racial snark into your bigoted post. Ask me how surprised I am. Go on, ask me.

You got homophobe and racist in the same post. Impressive, you must have been practicing.
