The riots had started due to Rodney King. The Korean shopkeepers would have been dead if they hadn't had assault rifles to defend themselves. It is a good example. The other thing is that functionally there is no difference between an assault rifle and a semi-automatic deer rifle that has been on the market since the 1910s. Obviously there is a need, or we wouldn't still be selling and using them.

Assault rifles are not a major crime weapon. In 2011 (latest year the FBI has released stats for on this subject), all rifles (assault and otherwise) were responsible for 323 of 12,664 total murders, or 2.5%. Not a major murder weapon by far.

All rifles in 2012 were responsible for 322 murders out of 12,765. The same 2.5%
