Obama is undoubtedly the worst negotiator ever in the history of the United States.

Three Cuban spies were handed over for one sick U.S. civilian.

The Cuban government never agreed on free and open elections for its people.

The Cuban government never agreed on free and open speech for its people and press.

The Cuban government never agreed on a free market system of trade and commerce.

The Cuban government never agreed on freedom and liberty of any kind.

And the Cuban government never agreed on extraditing the 70+ fugitives back to the U.S. who are currently hiding out in Cuba.

This is tiresome deflection. We don't have China a mere 90 miles off our coastline. We don't have American fugitives hiding out in China. Cuba isn't a major world player threatening key allies (Japan and Korea, mostly) in a strategic part of the globe thereby necessitating we interact with them. Etc. etc. etc....get a new talking point.

    This thread is about Cuba.

If you want to talk about China, then create a new thread.

Now how can you call the man a bad negotiator ? Rumor has it that Obama is considering trading 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a time share in Maui

I would have held out for a pork sandwich and a mojito in addition. Seriously the embargo was a 50 year failure, why make it a 60 year failure?

Short term thinking. The Castros will be dead in a few years. Obama's decision to open our relationship will pay off, for both countries, in the long run. I realize it's difficult to impossible for conservatives, but just table the knee-jerk hysteria for once and look at the big picture.

How can you say that, Molon Labe?

Obama gets to grant legitimacy to an illegitimate socialist dictatorship.

You know what's funny? Since the Feinstein report came out, "progressives" from Obama down to his ANSWERnik base have been pretending they're all about human rights. That dog and pony show didn't last long, did it? :)

Are you saying his deal with China to harm our economy now in exchange for them maybe harming their economy in 30 years was a bad deal?

That's the nature of a negotiation, isn't it? Where both sides have to do something they don't wish to do, in order to get something they wish to have.

Trade and commerce help everyone. Few of the US trading partners meet the standards you're demanding from Cuba. So Cuba wins, the US wins, and you win because you get to reinforce your conviction that Obama is terrible no matter what he does. Can't beat that.

I'm as Republican as they come, and I'll freely admit that I know the basic historical facts re: the Cuban revolution, the Bay of Pigs, the Mariel boat lift, etc etc but not the finer political points of the whole US/Cuba thing, but personally I find this long overdue. I mean, we rebuilt Japan and quickly normalized relations after what they did to us in WWII, the same with Germany. We have diplomatic relations and trading with many countries where we don't agree with the regimes. Obviously, the embargo on relations didn't work or have the desired effect in 50 years. As much as I personally dislike Obama and most of what he has done as President, I have no problem with this.

The fact that Cuba is a 3rd world country is exactly the reason it's laughable there was an embargo to this day in the first place.

dudes, Communism already lost the Cold War on a platform of the best Things in life are free. We have a Commerce Clause. Is the right merely protecting their stakehold in the military-industrial complex, as a form of entitlement?

A perfect example of how the Right considers American citizens "nothing." Getting TWO Americans back is worthless to the Right, in fact, to the Right one doesn't even exist.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2014/12/17/obama-cuba-alan-gross-prisoner/20526497/

The deal was finalized when two Americans had returned home from Cuban prisons. One was Alan Gross, a Maryland man who spent more than five years in a Cuban prison after he was arrested while distributing communications equipment on the island while working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. The second was described as an "intelligence asset" who had spent more than 20 years in Cuban prisons, according to three senior White House officials who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Yes. Obama should have refused to accept a sick American in order to win a schoolyard "that's not fair!" fight.

Contrary to all his sycophants, I personally dont think Obama is very bright. Anyone that needs a teleprompter to talk to a 6th grade class cant be very bright. So I guess it follows he probably is not a very good negotiator either.

Yeah it did. With an embassy there, it won't be long before we can simply hop a small boat and get all the rum and prostitutes we want. And all Obama is doing is opening up markets for the capitalists. How cool is that? You do believe in capitalism, right?

If it's a 3rd world country now (with pretty good education and medical systems, btw) what was it when Batista and Lansky were in charge, a 5th world country? And, let's face it, where ever we support dictatorships in Central and South America, the countries are worse off than Cuba.

In your opinion a 3rd world nation is absolutely harmless and incapable of doing harm to other nations? Really?

    Whatever spins your propeller around......
