Why do Americans value the ability to own a gun so much?

That would depend on whether the US Military would turn their guns on their fellow citizens OR on the Government who appears to hate them.

 

I don't think we are afraid as in one afternoon Abdul is gonna be running through my farm with an AK-47. I think the fear is more like they are gonna bomb bases globally, or somehow sneak a nuclear warhead into a harbor on a boat and detonate it. How close can a 100 foot yacht get to the NY Harbor before the Harbor Patrol boards it? Probably like a mile or so, no? Could you imagine a megaton nuke going off in NY Harbor?

 

I think most of us that were in the ANG would have a hard time even considering bombing our neighbors. As soon as a POTUS demanded that, there would be a civil war on each base. The thing about deploying - we are in some foreign country dealing with bad guys. That's so different than being a weekend warrior and being told by the Governor or a POTUS to take out the locals. If a POTUS was telling me to take out my home town; I would be loading telemetry for the White House and not my farm.

 

I'm virtually certain that guns should be exponentially more 'regulated' here in America than they are.

And I think in about 20-50 years, most Americans will reach the same conclusion.

I'm all for self-defense... but handing out instruments of DEATH to everyone is NOT the real solution. (Things must become more regulated than that.)

We are our own worst enemy sometimes.

 

A lot would. Americans are not that different from any other nationality. You guys still think Russians are your enemy. Easily buy into propaganda. You already shoot each other over pettiness. So yeah I do believe the military would go to war against Americans.

 

And how many American active duty service members do you know personally?

You must live in a city. Out in the country you can't drop a deer or a turkey with an erection and a smile.

 

The feeling that you can actually do something about your government if it gets out of control is far superior to any other adverse effects. This is, was, and always will be, my opinion.
I can't imagine living in a world where I have ZERO control over my own safety. If I knew that this is something wrong with my boss I would shoot him.

 

The biggest instrument of death is government. In your world, only government will be the death dealer.

 

If I got called to base and drove to Syracuse just to hear some idiot tell me to attack my home town; he would get the first bullet. I really think Kent State was a fluke.

 

And if your hometown was a rebel stronghold and you didn't follow ordere you'd be arrested and do many years in prison.

 

Really? There is nowhere in this country that does not have freedom minded gun loving people. Next door or across the country, I would defend the 2nd Amendment.

The same conclusion is that we're humans. Humans are instinctively aggressive. We've been bred for aggression for thousands of years and expecting the few to hold all the cards with no intent for aggression is naive.
