There is a large percentage of the population that has immunized but does not have immunity. Vaccines do not convey a lifetime of immunity, and adults rarely maintain their artificial antibodies through boosters. Adults often spread VPD without even knowing they are infected because their immune system is robust enough to handle the infection. Some don't even know they are sick. That's how measles moves through what is often described as an immune herd. The problem wasn't unvaccinated children. The problem was their parents. Our strategy of only vaccinating the vulnerable is a strategy that is predicated on the notion that the state has the ability to determine when vulnerability exceeds risk. The problem is the state has no clue what the risk is. These vaccines aren't the same as what we were given as children. We have no idea what the long term effects are.
Well, I don't plan on traveling, nor do I plan on sending my kid overseas for any reason. But with that, you do make points in my favor. It simply doesn't matter if every child is immunized, immunizations fail... in addition to posing a health risk. And the last bit was hilarious, gotta admit... millions? calm down. I have no desire to send my kids to a public school that mandates a largely unnecessary schedule of immunizations as a prerequisite for attendance. I'd be fine with homeschooling, or a private school which doesn't subscribe to a 'sky is falling' doctrine concerning vaccines. - - - Updated - - - Are you serious right now?
Not to worry, I've read your posts. This one in particular caught my attention; "why worry about my non-vaccinated child, if your child is vaccinated"? Again, that is foot in mouth logic. The simple answer to that is, because another non-vaccinated child could become sick from your non-vaccinated child. For references, look into a little history for proof; http://www.earlyamerica.com/early-america-review/volume-11/native-americans-smallpox/ - - - Updated - - - Again, take a history lesson; http://www.earlyamerica.com/early-america-review/volume-11/native-americans-smallpox/
So... you want me to consider ancient history in the context of modern times where that ancient history is irrelevant, and take you seriously? Take care, have a nice day.
They are not required to be vaccinated only if they attend a public or private school in California, so its still up to the parents. And those children with medical issues where not be vaccinated is necessary they are exempt which is an acceptable as a group to consider a justified reason. But I do see an issue however if a parent can't homeschool a child under the laws there and it would be to great a burden to comply with a moral or religious objection thereby taking away choice. Or they could fight on religious grounds that private religious schools should be exempt since they are private and the choice should be theirs. But for now if you want to send a child to a school there they need to be vaccinated or you can leave the State.
I believe that every child should be vaccinated for most diseases, but there needs to be well thought out limits which are supported by medical science. My family has a history of Guillain Barre' Syndrome (GBS) and vaccinations can cause an onset of GBS. GBS is infinitely worse than pertusis, measles, mumps, and a whole host of other malladies which we are vaccinated for. There needs to be a risk versus reward analysis available for special circumstances. Our children wouldn't be allowed in school without all vacinations and we couldn't find doctors who would administer the innoculations because it just wasn't medically sound. We did spend close to a year homeschooling one child while we fought to get a medical exemption. That is just too much hassle that was completely unnecessary. So now, in California, the legislature, a group of self-aggrandizing bozos without medical knowledge and training, are pre-empting the science based determinations of doctors. How is that a good thing? Like I said, I am in favor of vaccinations, it just cannot be a one size fits all solution to remedy the irresponsibility of a small minority of parents.
Total bull. The anti-vaccine movement is not partisan. Those nuts come from both parties. That said, honestly (and selfishly) speaking, the best situation for a child is to be not vaccinated in a community with 99% vaccination. You get the herd immunity without the small possibility of side effects. My kids are immunized. I don't want to count on other kids' vaccinations to protect my kids from those diseases.
I think this should be done on a case by case basis, otherwise I fear it could be treated like the scheduled drug system which is political rather then based on science if a new vaccination is created, it should not be required until proved safe .
I'm very well read on herd immunity. Can you tell me the efficacy rate of measles vaccine in adults say 25-55?
They think it causes autism in the majority because of some bunk studies and some liability diffusing warning labels. Plus mercury is an element in one of the chemical compounds used to preserve the vaccines (don't worry its in a form that is essentially harmless and not like playing with mercury out a of damn thermometer but you try telling them that and you're a "shill for big pharma")
Illegals coming in are putting more people at risk than anyone else. Let's make it mandatory they get vaccinated before coming across the border OR better yet, throw them all out.
And even a vaccine is not 100% effective. - - - Updated - - - also vaccines are not 100% effective and you need herd immunity to ensure the disease dies a painful lonely death, like polio.
The comment was not for you, but for leftlegmoderate. Why don't you tell me the efficacy rate of measles vaccines in adults. I'm not making any claims about that. You made the claim, you prove it.
Was your comment not meant to convey the importance of so called herd immunity? Our current strategy of only vaccinating vulnerable populations does not create one.
There are more case of herpes zoster, primarily because we have more older people still alive. Most of them had chickenpox as kids (not the vaccine, which was not introduced until 1995, meaning the first kids to get it as toddlers are now only 20).
and don't forget the cripplings from the diseases either. Things like deafness etc. from the disease running its course.
