Assad has always been a friend of Islamist terrorists. It was only a matter of time before one of them turned on him.

In my book, he's just the lesser of two evils. He needs to assume room temperature along with Caliph Ibrahim and Ali Khamenei...

Russia don't care if Assad remains in power. As long as it legal and not by force or against the people's whishes.

"The key finding was that while most Arabs outside Syria feel the president should resign, attitudes in the country are different. Some 55% of Syrians want Assad to stay, motivated by fear of civil war – a spectre that is not theoretical as it is for those who live outside Syria's borders." - @thegaurdian.com

Russia just knows that if there was a legal transfer of power, they will still get their gas deal

It is quite interesting to see how less you know guys about what is going on in the Middle East and relations between Turkey and Russia. First and foremost if there is anyone to blame for the creation of Islamist/Jihadist groups in the Middle East, it is USA. These groups were supported and trained by the USA during Cold War for their efforts to fight back SSCR in Afghanistan invasion. Al-Qaeda, Taliban, ISIS and etc. all of them are the remnants of that period.Even Putin explicitly explains it in his talks. Just google it. These people were used as mercenairies by many of the countries including Assad and acoording to my belief also Turkey. As the transition without Assad was spoken of, it was the best deal for Assad to show the world that instability would reign in Syria if he is overthrown. ISIS was an excellent example for his case to show the world that these monsters would reign Syria if he is out.
About Bashar Assad... There is no doubt that he committed war crimes in his country. He is not different than Gaddafi or Ben Abidin bin Ali. Even his father was supporting Kurdish terrorists (I know you would not call them terrorists, you would more probably prefer rebels or freedom fighters but just take a look at the photos of the babies killed by PKK. Maybe you would change your idea http://galeri.uludagsozluk.com/r/pkk-nin-yüzlerce-çocuğu-ve-bebeği-öldürmesi-173302/) and Russia was always silent about it. http://www.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&ALID=2S5RYDZ2WKB1 PKK was training their forces in Lebanon within the auspices of Assads at those times. (I see no reason to explain inseperable relations between Syria and Lebanon. If you do not know about it, go read some books)
Another point is that, when Russia intervened in Syrian crisis, they bombed anyone including Free Syrian Army, Turkomans but not Bashar Assad and PYD (syrian branch of PKK, terrorist organization) http://www.reuters.com/article/2015...ria-idUSKCN0SK0QR20151026#tEPUbCQYfexlEfZ5.97
We know that Russia would trade Assad at a good price later on as he always does in international relations.
Shooting down a Russian plane... Was it a good idea? Hell no. Turkey and Russia is conducting a nuclear power plant project in Turkey. Mersin Akkuyu Nuclear Power plant. Go search for it on the internet. As a country of external dependence for the energy, I am sure that this downing of the jet would definitely serve for the good of the relations between two countries!!!

The Syrian Government has always been a sworn enemy of Islamists. What are you talking about. The biggest criticism of the Syrian government before the civil war was its attack on the Muslim Brotherhood when Bashar's father was the president.

"Rebels" from outside their border. Didn't you read wikileaks? The United states hoped that Assad would over react to extemist coming into his country. Which he did. Russia just bailed him out with the pipeline as a motive.

Downing a jet is one thing. Sinking their ship is another.

This is a subtle way of threatening Tukey and warn them of their future actions.

You know Vis the only possible way that Turkey would shoot down this Russian military aircraft is if it entered Turkish airspace and then did not respond to Turkish Military and NATO air traffic controllers.

They would just not shoot it down....they would ask it to identify itself....then tell it to leave Turkish airspace.

This is very unfortunate what happened.

Three steps as announced by top brass:

1 Each and every strike groups’ operation is to be carried out under the guise of fighter jets

2 Air defense to be boosted with the deployment of Moskva guided missile cruiser off Latakia coast with an aim to destroy any target that may pose danger

3 Military contacts with Turkey to be suspended

Sergey Rudskoy, a top official with the Russian General Staff, condemned the attack on the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace by a Turkish fighter jet as “a severe violation of international law”. He stressed that the Su-24 was downed over the Syrian territory. The crash site was four kilometers away from the Turkish border, he said.

Rudskoy said the Russian warplane did not violate Turkish airspace. Additionally, according to the Hmeymim airfield radar, it was the Turkish fighter jet that actually entered Syrian airspace as it attacked the Russian bomber.

The Turkish fighter jet made no attempts to contact Russian pilots before attacking the bomber, Rudskoy added.

“We assume the strike was carried out with a close range missile with an infra-red seeker,” Rudskoy said. “The Turkish jet made no attempts to communicate or establish visual contact with our crew that our equipment would have registered. The Su-24 was hit by a missile over Syria’s territory.”

Russia now plans to implement new measures aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s air base in Syria and in particular to bolster air defense.

Russian guided missile cruiser Moskva, equipped with the ‘Fort’ air defense system, similar to the S-300, will be deployed off Latakia province's coast.

"We warn that every target posing a potential threat will be destroyed,” lieutenant general Sergey Rudskoy said during the briefing.

The Moskva (‘Moscow’) missile cruise is a flagship vessel of the Russian Black Sea fleet and is one of the fleet’s two biggest ships. The cruiser was stationed in Sevastopol but left in summer 2015 after being deployed to the Mediterranean Sea where it joined Russia’s standing naval force in the Mediterranean.

Since September 30, the Moskva cruiser acts as a covering force for the Russian air forces in Syria while deployed in the eastern Mediterranean.

“All military contacts with Turkey will be suspended,” Rudskoy added.

He's going to do more than that. He's now bombing the so called 'friendly' terrorists, mercilessly. He has also given orders that when anyone poses the slightest threat, to shoot them.

It seems to me that Erdogan is doing everything possible to undo what he did, but Putin isn't Merkel or Obama.. He doesn't bow to megalomaniacs. Erdogan is dependent on Russia and Iran for gas, so who knows what technical problems are going to pop up with the pipelines.

Out of curiosity, how many nations have broke off diplomatic relations with Turkey? These are the ones I'm sure of: Armenia, Egypt, Iraq, and Cyprus These are the ones I'm not sure of: Lebanon and Israel.
