We in the fire service refer to motorcyclists with helmets as "brain buckets". Those without helmets as "squash".
Not their "soul," if there is such a thing. And certainly not their life. And motorcycles aren't. Thus this discussion isn't about what the law is, but rather what the law should be. Both drugs and motorcycles should be legal. Albeit for different reasons.
Over 1/2 of all fatal motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers in cars hitting the motorcyclist most typically by making a left turn into the path of the motorcycle while the rider is going straight. How about banning cars instead?
what are the sales figures of Ducati in the USA as a % of total motorcylce sales? Heck, I could also cite Lotus as a kick butt 4 cylinder car but the MAJORITY of 4 cylinder vehicles are not. I stand by my statement that in addition to wearing a helmet and leather, my riding style is anticipatory and I will not put myself into a position where I'm easy prey. Bikes with high power-to-weight ratio have served me well and many are comfortable for long cruising. I'm not talking supersport bikes where my legs cramp up after 15 miles. I'm starting to poke around right now for a new ride and am considering either this which can have bags mounted if need be and removable so I get the best of both worlds or this but it's heavier
Why is this question even being asked. Now we'll have to an "association for the continued fight of motorcyclists civil liberties."
The roads were originally and specifically built for the use of bicycles... The Good Roads Act was formed and funded by the founder and owner of Columbia Bicycles. This is the very reason that everyone has a right to use a bicycle on roads, where driving a car is just a privilege. "Motor vehicles crashes cost the USA $871 billion a year in economic loss and societal harm, according to a new study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration." - 2014. Take that into consideration when throwing around banning a form of transportation.
I wonder if statistically speaking owning a motorcycle is more dangerous than owning a gun. If so it would be a good retort to the anti gun crowd,
yup, and that's their choice. Heck, people are also more likely to die in an accident if they're in a compact car than an SUV - I don't think we should ban compact cars, either.
Do the motorcycles themselves kill or are humans involved? When I do any serious riding, I suit-up in armor. Helmet, impact gloves, protective jacket, boots and sometimes protective pants. Those who ride in flip-flops, in shorts and no helmet are careless. Insurance should not pay for their own deaths and injuries when they are the cause of the accident. Those who ride in full protective gear are rarely killed, in fact, MotoGP racers can wipe out at 150 MPH and only break a wrist.
Maybe if more emphasis was placed on knowing how to drive, rather than the ability to obtain insurance, so many people wouldn't be dying on the nations highways. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Traffic fines need to be based on your income, so that the punishment is actually a deterrent.
We all takes risks, and usually for the same reason. We decide that the risk is worth the benefit. When the potential cost is shared, that decision is often shared. When it's just your life, it should be just your decision. (imho)
I do not think suicide is a choice. As a Jew I believe that suicide would carry a very long penalty, while most Christians and Muslims believe that suicide is penalized for eternity. - - - Updated - - - I agree 100%.
I road my whole life, on and offroad, but today, with all the irresponsibility, ignorance and stupidity of the younger crowd who believes that everybody owes them something, and that they are the only thing that matters in life, I prefer to have some heavy metal protecting my ass.
Apparently Allah makes an exception when you explode yourself in a crowded area of unarmed women and children.
I have a crotch rocket, but I ride it like an old grandmother most of the time. I try to stay off busy roads and usually just ride for pleasure on evenings and weekends.
