Happiness comes from self-validation, Rick... if you're ever going to find it, it has to come from within. You can search high and low and all over the world....but at the end of your journey, all you'll ever truly find is yourself. Most people don't get that - that's why they get bitter and radicalized. You don't realize it now - you're probably not supposed to - but someday you'll realize if you'd only listened, I could have saved you a lot of searching.

Did you even bother to read the specs? The 308 Win caliber is only 1 pound heavier then the M16A2, and the largest variant is only (the 243 Win) is only 1.3 pounds heavier then the 308 cal. I got my first rifle when I was 12 years old. It was a MAS-49 rifle, and it weighed 10.5 pounds. Even at 12 years old, I was a good shot. When I joined the Marines, and was issued the M16A1, it felt like a toy.

I was saying that these guys are confronting new pressures that are really causing some issues, but I know what you mean.

Were you ever where I currently am and, if so, how did you find yourself? What you just said really touches me because I heard the exact same thing when I was 13. I had been kicked out of a very nice Lutherans childrens home home, and right before I left the "house father" came up to me and said, "son, your life is going to get a lot tougher now. Your life could have been a lot better here, but you don't follow the rules, and you have to leave. God bless you, and I hope you get you life together." My next 3 years were indeed the worst of my life, but I finally came out okay. Now, I've reached another one of those crossroads. How to find this validation...

    What is this self-validation?

Well, from what I've read, there is no appreciable difference between the .260 Remington and 6.5mm creedmore.

Depends on your application - .308 is better for, say, hunting, whereas the 6.5 is better for paper targets at 600yds or more.
The .243 clambering puzzles me - aside from a small savings in cartridge weight, you might as well use the 6.5.

    Me too! Thanks!

    Neeeeh.....
Depends on the range and the Lapua. IMHO you can do a lot better than just about any factory load.

I have more than 10 guns, but fewer than 100.
Why should I ever have to wait any number of days to buy another?

    Well...
You do not need a license to buy a car, own a car, keep the car on your property, or use it in private property.
What benefit is there in treating gun licenses like drivers licenses?

You didn't give a sound argument? It wasn't an argument at all, it was an opinion.

Do you support the banning of fully automatic firearms? If so, why?

Falsely yelling "fire" in a crowded theater place people is not protected by the 1st amendment because it places people in a condition of clear, present and immediate danger.
How does that translate to a limitation on the right to arms?

    - - - Updated - - -

Especially when that argument is demonstrably unsound.

    - - - Updated - - -

Still waiting for your around argument for banning this rifle.

I see then. For killing your wife, kids, neighbors, friends, co-workers. All the traditional uses of a weapon of this type.

    I would ask this.

Does this device have a purpose other than to kill, practice killing, or threaten killing?

If not, then are there similar devices better suited to specific uses than this. Say, a handgun for personal defense, a long rifle for hunting game and a shotgun for hunting birds?

If so then this device is a general purpose system solely designed for the capability of killing many in a short period.

That is justification for banning it.

Thanks for your support the petition can be found at www.bradycampaign.org

there is not one single city, state, or county, that considers this gun to be an assault-weapon.

    its a bolt-action.

not even in NYC is this illegal.

What about this "type" of firearm leads you to believe that its traditional use involves killing wives, kids, neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc?
Can you cite an instance where this was the case?
Please be as specific as you can.

The only difference is in the heaviest bullet weights and with max charges, and even there its slim. BTW I know Zak Smith (author you linked to) and he's the real deal.

Some people swear by the .243 for both hunting and long range shooting. It does have less recoil, and allows a stiffer barrel at the same size. Its also suitable for varminting all the way to deer.

Growing up hunting for Pacific coastal range deer in central CA, it was the caliber of choice for most people I knew. Accurate, light and perfect for deer that would never see the heavy side of about 150lbs.

    Indeed.
I looked at everything form .243 to .338 when building my LR gun and settled on 6.5mm
There ARE billets with better ballistics than a 140 VLD at 3000fps , but you have to drive them terribly fast. so much so that the extra powder and recoil negate the advantage.

    By what standard?
Why isn't this rifle well-suited for hunting or target shooting?

First, you asked a question and I provided the reasoned response.

    Second:

"Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that living in a home where guns are kept increased an individual’s risk of death by homicide by between 40 and 170%.2 Another study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology similarly found that “persons with guns in the home were at greater risk of dying from a homicide in the home than those without guns in the home.” This study determined that the presence of guns in the home increased an individual’s risk of death by homicide by 90%."

Most "wives, kids, neighbors, friends, co-workers" are people. this weapon is specifically designed to kill people. To kill them quickly and to kill many of them.

you question is as dishonest as your premise.

Oh lookie!!!!! In your dishonesty you neglected the premise.

"Does this device have a purpose other than to kill, practice killing, or threaten killing?

If not, then are there similar devices better suited to specific uses than this. Say, a handgun for personal defense, a long rifle for hunting game and a shotgun for hunting birds?"

There are better suited devices for those purposes that do not pose the same risk.

Alright, I'm going to go right off the subject here, so I apologize to everyone else, but this is for Rick...

Basically, when you get right down to it, self-validation is simply just being comfortable in your own skin. That's it. It's not giving a flying hoot what other people think of you - well, other than the people who matter to you and who you respect. It means not requiring other people's approval to be happy - you don't need the light shined on you, it's you who shines the light. Respect is like Love.... first you've got to find it in yourself and then others can find it in you and you can find it in others.

As for the rest.... you know what I say? Fu*k'em all. When you get to a fork in the road, take it. Embrace the challenge. When you get right down to it, there are two roads you can take in life where it comes to a career..... you can go to school and learn whatever you can and then take that piece of paper and kiss someone's a*s the rest of your life until you get to a point where they start kissing your's.... or you can go off-road for a bit and find your own way in the wilderness. It's that age-old question - do you want security or freedom? I think you've already made your choice, even if you haven't realized it yet. So embrace it. You don't need their piece of paper, and you don't strike as much of a brown-noser. Just remember, it's easier to get lost in the wilderness - a lot of people who go out there never come back. You're going to need to be well-equipped and disciplined if you go that way. Live off the land. Learn what you need as you go. Find the dirtiest, crappiest jobs that nobody wants to do because they're too hard and then make them your own. Do what you have to do to get where you have to go. You need the drive to survive and then you can thrive.

Yous stated, as part of your "reasoned" response that the traditional use for this "type" of firearm involves killing wives, kids, neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc?
Can you demonstrate this "traditional" use for this "type" of firearm?

You also stated as part of your "reasoned" response that this [rifle] is a general purpose system solely designed for the capability of killing many in a short period.
    By what standard?
Why isn't this rifle well-suited for hunting or target shooting?

If you cannot answer these questions, then your response is not "reasoned".

    Snicker....

    Ok...
Can you describe, specify, or cite a rifle is as good of better for hunting, say, deer, and demonstrate how it poses a meaningfully smaller "risk"?

How is this rifle less suitable than, say a Remington M700 (shown below)? How does it pose a greater "risk"?

    And

    from Outdoor Life

Top Fifty hunting rifles of the last 10 years. This shows up at #30 and is the only "assault style" weapon on the list.

"The evolution of the big-game AR rifle has taken an interesting step forward with the introduction of the Remington .30 AR. Despite the recent enthusiasm to create AR-style rifles for deer-size and larger game, the concept isn't without its problems. At the top of the list is the weight of the rifles chambered in rounds adequate for the task. Compared with similarly configured bolt guns, they are bulky and uncomfortable to carry".

    http://www.outdoorlife.com/photos/gallery/guns/2011/05/best-hunting-rifles-decade/?image=50

For target shooting, no, your gun's not there either

    http://www.gundigest.com/guns/rifle-reviews-articles/long-range-rifles-for-long-distance-shooting

so, why don't you come clean? Why do you NEED this gun? Not a good hunting rifle, not great for targets, certainly not useful for personal defense. Why do you want it?

If the answer is, because I want it then, maybe, you've provided you own reason for banning.
