BREAKING NEWS U.S., Russia reach deal on cease-fire in Syria

“The United States and Russia announced Friday a new multi-step plan intended to bring Syria closer to a negotiated peace deal and to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need in the war-torn country.

“Today the United States and Russia are announcing a plan which we hope will reduce violence, reduce suffering and resume movement toward a negotiated peace and a transition in Syria…that if followed, has ability to provide a turning point, a moment of change,” said Secretary of State John F. Kerry……….

Uhhh, it's the Washington Post... Anyway they have had cease fires before and everyone stops except the terrorists. When the Syrian army tries to stop their advances, Kerry starts complaining that they are attacking the moderates embedded with them. You figure!

If all the fighting stopped tomorrow, it will still take years and years to bring that country back together and rebuild it.. Decades perhaps.

If it lasts, good. I have my doubts personally, but I just want the situation in Syria to end.

You haven't got the clue what the deal is. Either post the link which will specifically back what you say, or refrain from posting your own conclusions as a fact. At this stage everyone speculates. Evidence, please.

    CNN article

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/09/politics/syria-ceasefire-kerry-lavrov/index.html

He added that the accord will also prevent the air forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from flying combat missions anywhere that the opposition is present, calling this provision the "bedrock of the agreement," labeling Assad's air force the "main driver of civilian casualties" and migrant flows.

Kerry and Lavrov said that once the cessation of hostilities holds for seven days, the US and Russia would begin working on military coordination in an effort to target al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, the al Nusra Front.

The new US-Russia strategy hinges on deeper cooperation between the US and Russian military against extremist groups operating in Syria, particularly ISIS and Nusra Front. The two sides are also holding talks on coordinating more closely the air operations they are both conducting in Syria.

The Syrian air force will be functional outside the areas where US and Russia conduct their joint operations. In other words your statement has been disingenuous Ronny.

Syrian conflict: US and Russia agree peace moves
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37324872

Mr Lavrov said the joint implementation centre would allow Russian and US forces to "separate the terrorists from the moderate opposition."

He said there would be co-ordinated strikes against the terrorists by the Russian and US air forces, and that in some areas, that excluded action by the Syrian air force.

"We have agreed on the areas where such co-ordinated strikes would be taking place, and in those areas, on neutral agreement shared by the Syrian government as well, only the Russian and US air force will be functional," he said.

But Mr Lavrov added that "the Syrian air force will be functional in other areas, outside those that we have singled out for Russian-American military co-operation."

The deal is hugely complex, the BBC's diplomatic correspondent James Landale who has been following the talks in Geneva says.

It requires an awful lot of people to do an awful lot of things at the right time at the right place, he adds.

But Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry stressed that the plan could pave the way for a political transition.

Who is pro-Putin now? I think Obama just made a deal with him. He must like Putin. And of course, Hillary
and Bill got millions of $$$ for selling our uranium to Putin so there's that.

A real cease-fire in Syria will happen only when those who are actively supporting groups that are fighting to overthrow Assad cease such actions. Neither the US nor Russia can impose a cease-fire in Syria otherwise. The importance of what has been announced is merely in the fact that the US will now cooperate with Russia in targeting one of the main terrorist groups fighting the Assad regime, namely the Al-Nusra front (or whatever new name this Al Queda affiliate has taken for itself these days). Since many of the opposition groups the US supports are implicitly allied to the Al-Nusra front and the territories they hold are often held jointly with this group, it will make for an interesting dynamic to see what is going to unfold as a result of this deal. At the same time, if the US and Russia indeed conduct joint operations against the Al-Nusra front in the areas in question, I am not sure there will be any need for the Syrian air force to conduct operations against them in the same area. But what the Syrian forces will do will depend on the actual conditions in the war and not on any accord between the US and Russia.

Doesn't seem likely when there's no real difference between rebels and IS terrorist scum..

    - - - Updated - - -

No chance of that, unfortunately. Any area that is supposed to be off-limits to Syrian and Russian bombing is precisely where IS rats will be.

    hey imyoda -

the msm google, yahoo has been on again, off again RE: SYRIA russia-american peace deal one headline actually read :

'basic framework agreed upon' but maybe this is the problem -

3,000 “Moderate Rebels” Defect to the Islamic State (ISIS).
    US Preparing 5,000 More

"For the US already, plausible deniability is impossible with revelations as early as 2007 exposing America’s desire to use Al Qaeda as a proxy military force. With Harakat Hazm turning over US-supplied antitank TOW missiles to Al Qaeda, and now an entire brigade-sized defection by so-called “Free Syrian Army” fighters to ISIS – what besides “disaster” could befall America’s new brigade it plans to start training this spring?

Inevitably, these fighters, their supplies and weapons will end up consolidated under ISIS and Al Nusra’s banner. Terrorism continues to grow in Syria not because of ISIS’ control over oilfields and revenue from hostage ransoms, but because the US and its partners continue to intentionally feed into its maw thousands of trained fighters, weapons, and billions in cash, equipment, and other supplies."
