Perhaps not for long. What is this "transition" they are talking about-the safe transition of Assad out of Syria?

    OP

Thank god for this news; let's hope that one side of the bipartisanship - and no prize for guessing which side that would be? [IMG] - doesn't start trying to run the show thence for it to all go pear-shaped. [IMG] As I suggested a few days ago, this Russia/US accord is the only thing that will stop IS in its tracks; although I'll qualify that assertion by saying only inasmuch as it will never get its Caliphate, but we certainly won't have heard the last of IS by any stretch of the imagination.

The US administration, Obama and his cronies were out. They're not fooling anyone. Together with their Wahabbi buddies they created great instability n the world. It's worth reading.

US-Saudi push for regime change arms terror groups, poses threat to Asia

    http://atimes.com/2016/09/us-saudi-push-for-regime-change-arms-terror-groups-poses-threat-to-asia/

slamic State and Saudi Arabia share the same intolerant Wahhabi ideology. Wahhabi-inspired extremism is dangerously changing the character of Asian states with large Muslim population like Indonesia. Realizing this threat and US-Saudi agenda for regime change, countries like China and India seem to be trying to forge a coalition and formulate plans to counter them.

The US-Saudi nexus is posing a problem for Asian security. From Afghanistan to Syria and now back to Asia, this nexus of arming and supporting Islamic extremists for regime change operations has spawned and introduced global jihad into the international community.

Dr. Brahma Chellaney in New Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research also noted, “Western powers actually encouraged the kingdom – as an antidote to communism and the 1979 anti-US Iranian revolution – to export Wahhabism.” [1]

Now after decades of petrol-dollars funding export of Wahhabism and “Saudization” of Asian Muslims, Asia is reaping the negative consequences of this nexus.[2] In a July 27 speech to the Rebuild Japan Initiative Foundation, US PACOM commander Admiral Harris warned Islamic State (IS) is metastasizing in the Indo-Asia Pacific region as a new battle front.[3]

    Shared Wahhabi ideology

This should come as no surprise, given IS and Saudi Arabia share the same intolerant Wahhabi ideology. As William McCants, author of The ISIS Apocalypse said, the official religion of Saudi Arabia is a ‘brand of ultraconservative Islam [that] is nearly identical to that of the Islamic State.”

The former imam of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mosque in Mecca corroborates this: “We have the same beliefs as ISIS (IS). We share their ideology, but we express it in a more refined way.”

In fact, when IS was looking for textbooks for its schools in Raqqa, it printed copies of official Saudi textbooks found online.

tweetAs such, Muslims in Asia who have been Wahhabized are naturally drawn to IS, similar to Muslims in Europe, Kosovo and elsewhere who have allowed Saudi-funded mosques and madrassas to take root.[4] Molenbeek, the epicenter of ISIS terrorism in Belgium, is one such example.

Wahhabi-inspired extremism is also changing the character of Asian states with large Muslim population. As Barack Obama explained to Malcolm Turnbull during an APEC summit, Saudi-funded Wahhabism has changed Indonesia from a relaxed, syncretistic Islam to a fundamentalist, unforgiving interpretation that is foreign and more Arab in orientation than it was when he lived there as a child[5]. Indonesia is now experiencing a surge in al-Qaeda and IS-related terrorist attacks.[6]

Nonetheless, the US continues to support Riyadh’s policy to the detriment of other countries. In Syria, instead of implementing a policy of counter-terrorism, US partners with Saudis to support al-Qaeda laced groups in a policy of regime change, while simultaneously destroying Yemen which allowed IS and al-Qaeda to thrive.[7]

This is a threat to Asia. While the US no longer needs Mideast oil and can retrench from the region at will, in contrast Asian states are increasingly dependent on the region for market access and energy sources. New Delhi and Beijing also face another grave challenge—protecting India’s seven million migrant workers and China’s two million in the Middle East.[8]

Furthermore, al-Qaeda, IS and various Salafist groups in the Mideast pose a real threat to China’s $1 trillion Belt and Road project across Eurasia.[9]

Given the fact US (1) no longer needs Mideast oil; (2) is geographically far away from the region vis-à-vis Asian states; (3) lacks a large domestic Muslim population at risk of radicalization; (4) partners with Wahhabi states for regime change rather than countering Wahhabi-inspired terrorism; and (5) is facing increasing international opprobrium for its destructive conduct in the Mideast especially in Yemen, it appears Asian states are coalescing to forge their own counter-terrorism initiatives.

Already in August, both India and China have upgraded their security ties with the Syrian government to counter al-Qaeda and IS.[10]...

It was summed up exquisitely in this piece of narrative from Bitter Lake: "It also outlines the US's alliance with Saudi Arabia, especially the former's agreement to buy Saudi oil, for control of a key energy supplier during the cold-war era, with Saudi Arabia gaining wealth and security in return, with agreement withstanding provided it was allowed to continue its violent and fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, Wahhabism, uninhibited from external influence."

And it has been allowed to continue its violent and fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, Wahhabism, uninhibited from external influence ever since? 'Chickens coming home to roost' comes to mind.

The alleged peace deal like everything John Kerry is involved with is meaningless. He and Obama with due
respect are lame ducks trying to paint a pretty picture before Obama leaves office for Clinton to inherit.

Its just a sham. Its a sham that makes Putin look important and Obama look like after 8 years of being
beeyatch slapped by Putin he's suddenly an equal peace partner.

Bottom line is both Russia and the US do not like the optics of Allepo and both need face saving to walk
    away from Allepo.

That's all they have done. Putin remains committed to Assad and Obama to anti Syrian rebels other than
    Al Nusra.

The stalemate in Syria will continue. To understand Syria is to understand the Sunnis, Alawites, Shiite, Druze,
Kurds, Berbers, Assyrians, all are trapped in a world what they feel is an all or nothing battle for existence.

There is no leader capable of reaching out to them all at this time. Certaintly not from Russia, China, the US or Europe
    let alone the Arab/Muslim world.

Syria right now is a failed nation like Somalia. Its a series of disjointed enclaves each with a leader. There
is no central government or centralized command structure. Assad's regime is only an enclave in Damascus.

Syria like Libya and Iraq and Somalia, has broken down into fractured enclaves. Such countries don't
have any institutions to unify the nation let alone an ability to achieve consensus with all the warlords of each enclave.

When Marshall Tito of Yugoslavia died, of course that artificial nation broke down, he was the only one
able to rule the competing factions and Tito while moderate compared to other dictators was none-the-less when
he had to be very tough on opponents. The problem, is there is no one in the Middle East with Tito's diplomatic skills. No one.

Kill a dictator like Ghaddafi or Hussein ad a vacuum is created that turns to anarchy and decentralized chaos.

Kerry, Obama and Putin are all hot air.

They are not visionaries, just weak men over compensating for penis size.

The Middle East other than in Israel has no institutions that promote critical thinking, peace, insightful conflict resolution or democratic
concepts so expecting someone to come out of that area who is Muslim with such ideas is unrealistic.

Any Muslim moderates educated in such thinking are usually educated overseas and/or leave and do not look back and how can they? If they returned what do they return to other than assassination for not remaining rigid and fundamentalist?

Tell me or ask yourself, how is it the modern democratic thinkers of Iran can not run their country? Just look. The Government
murders them. It killed off its university students and political opponents and like Erdogan in Turkey arrests and tortures its journalists
or anyone who questions the status quo. If you question Shiite fundamentalism you are dead.

Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, UAE, are nothing more than dictatorships. Yemen, Bahrain? Fractured failed nations in civil war.

The only reason Jordan hasn't crumbled is because of the loyal Beduin Army that protects its King. Lebanon? That's a failed nation now occupied by Shiite Hezbollah the proxy of Iran paralyzing the Christian and Sunni populations. Iraq? Right, Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites at permanent war with one another. Sudan? It still carries on genocide in its South and in South Sudan. Tunisia? Its a fractured nation paralyzed by Muslim extremists int he country side. Libya? Its another Somalia. Chad, Niger vast empty wastelands of sand terrorized by Muslim extremists who kill blacks. Algeria? It uses brute military strength to keep its militants dead or running? Show me one stable Middle East or North African Muslim nation. They do not exist.

Never have either. Even Morrocco, which relatively speaking is peaceful has had internal civil wars that tried kill its King.

Stability and Islamic nations do not go hand in hand? Bosnia, Croatia? No. Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, yah right if you think there haven't been and continue to be Muslim extremist killings and uprisings. Who else, Afghanistan? Pakistan?

Let's get real. The Muslim world is not anywhere near a stage of evolution for democratic principles at this time and when Muslims are peaceful like Amidyah Muslims, they get killed and vilified by fellow Muslims or if they modernize like Ismaili Muslims who are both successful and peaceful they are called Western sell outs.

There are good Muslims but let's not be stupid enough to think they could have grass roots support at this time.

Of all the nations, probably Iran has the most progressive of students but they are abandon. Obama abandon them and so has the West in favour of its fascist government. Obama abandon the progressive student movement in Turkey as well in favour of Erdogan.

Look at Obama and his b.s. He ushered in the Muslim Brotherhood as his platform of progressive change and look at what they are-ultra fascist extremist terrorists who propped what-Morsi in Egypt and Erdigan in Turkey.

Yah those are two visionaries. Morsi turned into what he really was a brutal dictator turning the Cotpic Christians into his scapegoats.

Erdogan? Yah there's a pillar of tolerance and democratic values.

The only difference between Putin an Obama is Putin knows he's a son of a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*), Obama pretends he is righteous.

That's because Islamic principles are antithetical to democratic principles. The written doctrine doesn't evolve.

There we have it once again. .. American lies and deception. The Syrian army has withheld its fire, while the American supported 'moderates' have fired 23 times after the cease fire killing 6 people and wounding 10 others. The last time there was a cease fire, the terrorists and their affiliate American supported 'moderates' used it to rearm and take back the territory freed by the Syrian army. Kerry in the meantime reiterated once again, that if it doesn't hold then it means Syria must be broken up.

The problem here is how can any cease fire hold, when one side doesn't want it to hold and could care less for the loss of human lives. Washington wants Syria broken up into separate ethnic and religious enclaves similar to the Balkans, that way it will be easier to control. I have no doubt the money given to the refugees... (probably by Saudi Arabia), was to facilitate their relocation into separate enclaves when they returned to Syria.

Of course the fact that the Syrian people want their country to be the way it was, and want to continue living with each other in a secular state, means nothing to Washington. So much for 'democracy'. Seems that Wahabism and terrorism rules the roost. ..or at least in Washington.

But the 127 civilians killed recently were by French jets, and the 23 before them were American jets. Oh that's right, I forgot about the 7 non existent hospitals bombed by the Russians... and then of course there are the white helmets dragging the kids out of the buildings. Weren't they the ones that cut the Christian boys head off? :confuse:

Iran and Hezbollah have said they support the ceasefire, although both have expressed concerns about it as well.

The chances it will hold are very slim since it offers no solution but some relief - so as soon as one side gets its wind back - its over,

I dont think the Syrians care that much for secular state if it means it will be ruled by Assad but dont take my word on it take their bullets as proof.

Speaking for myself, I oppose this so-called ceasefire and am worried that the combination of states that are lined up against Assad might be able to work on steering Russia (slowly, but surely) in the wrong direction in the process. While I totally understand if Russia wants to find a way to dis-entangle itself from Syria given the costs involved, and would not deny them the right to stop their own military contribution on the Assad side of the ledger, I would be greatly concerned if the Russians lend their voice, UN veto, and diplomatic clout to anything that might at some point suggest that outsiders can dictate who is to lead Syria in the future. Hence, the only peace proposals I find meritorious are those that stress the right of the Syrian people to decide their future and are meant to find the means to allow the Syrian people to freely (without any limitation on who can participate) choose the system and leaders they want for themselves.

American commandos 'forced to run away' from US-backed Syrian rebels

Video footage appears to show US commandos fleeing a Syrian town under a barrage of abuse and insults hurled at them by fighters from the American-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebel group.

The video appears to be the first evidence of US special forces cooperating with Turkish troops in their battle against Islamic State (Isil).

The incident illustrates the complex web of alliances and enmities in Syria, where many of America’s allies are fighting each other and some rebel groups that receive US support still harbour strong anti-American sentiments.

The footage shows a crowd of rebel fighters in the town of al-Rai near the Turkish border, which was captured from Isil by Syrian rebel groups with the backing of Turkey. Turkey, which launched a military incursion into Syria in late August, has been backing the FSA.

Russia says UN meeting over ‘Syria cease-fire’ deal cancelled over US objections

US did not want to say exactly what was in the documents outlining the deal hammered out last week by John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, says Russia's envoy to UN.

A hastily scheduled Security Council meeting was canceled because the US does not want to make public details of the Syrian cease-fire deal, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations said Friday.

Vitaly Churkin said there was no point in briefing the council if the US did not want to say exactly what was in the documents outlining the deal hammered out last week by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“This briefing is not going to happen and mostly likely we’re not going to have a resolution of the Security Council because the United States does not want to share those documents with the members of the Security Council and we believe that we cannot ask them to support a document which they haven’t seen,” Churkin said.

Obama says concerned Syrian government blocking humanitarian aid: White House

Obama, in a meeting with his national security aides, also "emphasized that the United States will not proceed with the next steps in the arrangement with Russia until we see seven continuous days of reduced violence and sustained humanitarian access," the White House said in a statement.

US-led coalition aircraft strike Syrian army positions – Syrian General Command

US-led coalition jets have bombed Syrian government forces’ positions near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, "paving the way" for Islamic State militants, the Syrian Army General Command told the state television.

According to Syria’s official SANA news agency, the bombing took place on al-Tharda Mountain in the region of Deir ez-Zor and caused casualties and destruction on the ground.

Sixty-two Syrian soldiers were killed and over 100 injured in the airstrike by the US-led coalition, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, said, citing information received from the Syrian General Command.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the aircraft which carried out the bombings had entered Syrian airspace from the territory of Iraq. Four strikes against Syrian positions was performed by two F-16 jet fighters and two A-10 support aircraft, it added.

Come on Gilos, anything is better than Saudi solution....Genocide on a massive scale. And they're not even hiding it. As I said many times, Obama's foreign policy in the Middle East is simply despicable. The USA sided with the worst of the worst.

A window into Wahhabism: Al Jazeera presenter calls for a grand religious genocide on live TV

“Go to Damascus and the areas which support Bashar al-Assad, and curse his father … and [exterminate] those areas” … those were the words of one television presenter this September.

“Why don’t you go displace them all and curse the ones who gave birth to them and [exterminate] them all?” Those were the questions an Al-Jazeera’s presenter asked his guest during a live show, de facto rationalising the very narrative used by Terror.

I ought to warn readers that what will follow offers an insight into the dystopian and warped reality of Wahhabism – this dogma Western powers have insisted on calling Islamic, for its leaders have claimed religious legitimacy through violent appropriation...
