What really caused the collapse of the Soviet Union was the collapse of world oil prices in the mid 1980's. When Saudi Arabia opened the tap and stopped supporting the OPEC oil posted price in the Spring of 1985, oil prices dropped 50% in the matter of a few months, causing a similar collapse in Russian foreign exchange and in the value of Russian oil and gas exports, which was the only way they could service their debts.

Which is one of the many reasons why the Obama Adminstration did not stand in the way of the US fracking boom, and encouraged a deal with Iran, both of which drove the price of oil (and thus, the value of Russia's oil exports down).

Sanctions also had a considerable effect.

Putin's efforts are not sustainable over the long haul, and he knows it.

All we really had to do was keep the pressure on.

Instead, we now have a fool who thinks he's an expert on foreign policy even though he couldn't find Russia on a map, and a Secretary of State whose job was to do the opposite of American foreign policy.

How does the president elect undermine his lowly spokesman? Did Obama ever do that in his eight years?

"Undermined" probably doesn't apply given the hierarchy, but "made to look like an idiot" probably does. That person has a tough road.

So, never mind what he says it's the fact that he lives in a Kardashian world that you find appealing.
You really should take a minute and read what he said. If it's doesn't bother you, we're doomed because there are more of you out there.

Rolling out nuclear policy on Twitter.
    God help us.

Meanwhile, a reminder that out of 20 presidential candidates from both parties, Donald Trump was the only one who had to have the nuclear triad explained to him.

This is an ongoing comedy since month ... like these soap operas in TV which run for many years. It started with he point that the US people choose to have a choice to elect plague or cholera and cholera won!
Unfortunately the letter "U" of USA is not standing for "Unimportant States of America" in the world ... and so the complete globe is part of this comedy in Washington D.C.!

The left has minimized, mocked, ridiculed, misrepresented, smeared and distorted everything that Trump has said or done during the course of this Presidential election. And they have been either wrong or hypocritical at every point to the point of losing the election entirely. This is more of the same. And on Inauguration Day, the left will bring out its whole Circus Critique before the eyes of an imperfect world.

People are sick and tired of politically correct politicians saying all kinds of things that sound good and they don't really mean. We're entering a new age where 140 chars is all you need to express how rou truly feel. Liberals hate twitter because it's fair and balanced.

Well the website is MSNBC which I don't trust but anyways I do think this is a waste of time. Nukes do nothing for our country but take up money. We already have enough nukes to hurt someone and the destruction on human life that they do is sad. Even our planet suffers. I still think Trump has the potential to be a great president but on this issue and I disagree with him and wish he would leave it alone. He needs to stick to making America great again and only focus on rebuilding our military and not our nukes.

Trump is great at saving jobs and focusing on our economy but this is an area he needs to let be. Again this is coming from MSNBC so not sure how true or false this is.

A fair assessment of the events. I'm not confident that he can MAGA but I hope I am proven wrong.

His staff isn't denying the quote, just explaining "what he really meant".

Yeah, and he's already ignited a new cold war. But he did wait until the EC cleared him first.

I don't want to be one of those drones that just agrees with everything my party does. I do disagree with him on this one. At least the nuclear threat level has gone away since Hillary has gone away.

I wish we could put this money to better use like feeding starving children or paying off our countries debt. I just don't see the need for our country to have any more big bombs. Can anyone explain to me what good it actually does to have nukes besides keeping other countries from bombing us?

I don't see how he has ignited a new cold war? He is trying to have good relations with Russia to prevent this and Hillary and Obama were the ones keeping Russia at a distance and our nuclear threat level up. Do you disagree or do you think Hillary had the right stance with Russia? I don't see what is wrong with having good relations with as many countries as possible and Russia is one of the 3 super powers in the world next to China and America.

Yes, a new age for teenagers. Stating your defence policy in less than 140 chars to the world sounds like a really good idea. You can't even edit it. What a great way for a president to act !

Trump tweet "We must bomb Russia" and ........ send.
    Trump : S**t, that's wrong!
    Trump: <delete>
Trump tweet : "We must bond with Russia" and ..... send

I don't think he's trying to lay out his entire foreign and domestic policies in 140 chars he just trying to show the world what he thinks of the mainstream media. He's a genius you'll see.

At what point does it become a real national security risk? It is beyond irresponsible to tweet (even potential) nuclear policy! Those kinds of statements need to be vetted, approved, and presented to the world in appropriate manner. Somebody needs to shut down his damn twitter account.

What in fvcks sake would lead you to think he has potential head up the local PTA let alone highest office on our country? Pontificating on US nuclear policy, potential defense contracts, or any other national topic should not be done on fvuck!ng (The english language does not have a strong enough adjective, the profanity doesn't suffice) twitter.

Most of Trump's job saving is not real. The KY Ford factory that he "saved" turned out to have no plans to leave. Pence's tax break bribe to the Carrier Corp still resulted in them moving over half their jobs to Mexico, and the Rexnord plant that Trump vowed to save just announced that it is closing and moving all its manufacturing jobs to Mexico. And Trump's big photo op with the Japanese owner of Sprint, announcing big investments in the US creating jobs, turned out to be all about Mr. Son's end game of a Sprint/T-Mobile merger that would ultimately kill off a huge number of jobs.
Maybe Trump needs to talk to his kids - Eric has applied for more H2 visas to bring in foreign workers to his Virginia winery, because apparently there is nobody in Virginia who is looking for work. Or maybe Trump will have his Labor Secretary deny the visas. That could happen, right?

I don't think the Russians or Chinese are going to launch nukes because Trump called them out on twitter. Calm down its all about who swings the biggest stick.
