Unfortunately that's not the case- the invasion of mainland Japan was scheduled for November 1945.
Never mind the number of Japanese that would have died in the continuing incendiary raids would certainly have exceeded those in the nuclear bombings.

I think invading Japan would have been a massive tactical mistake. It would have been better to bomb them to oblivion.

I understand that Japanese would have died, but that is the fault of their government not surrendering. Also reducing the risk of future nuclear war, and keeping our technology secret is a higher priority. The Japanese were considering surrender a couple months before the nuclear strike with even the Emperor supporting it. Possibly the only reason to end the war quickly would have been to prevent the Russians from taking over China and making it communist, which happened anyway.

Perhaps - but invade them, we were set to do.

Perhaps -- but died they would have.

That said, why not force the end of the war with the bombs?

This assumes no one else gets the bomb - which is, of course, unsound.
Further, absent the nuclear violence that befell japan, the actual use of the weapon in a war with the Soviets is -more- likely.

    And they didn't.

OK, once again you make it clear you don't give a damn about the Chinese civilians being slaughtered, nor the tens of thousands of American and allied POWs being tortured and murdered by the Japanese, and the 800+ killed when the USS Annapolis torpedoed while returning after delivering the bomb obviously disproves your claim otherwise.

As I noted, your messages have NOTHING to do with concern for human lives and openly disregards reality overall for a fixation on condemning one for USA's greatest military successes ending the last world war.

Of course, you disregard that the USSR had an atomic bomb program as early as 1943 as did the UK and the atomic bomb was no secret whatsoever. Claiming the technology wouldn't be learned - when it was already known 2 years prior, is a non-reality as claiming if the Chinese had never used gun powder then guns, cannons and explosives would have ever come into existence. The USA, the UK, the USSR, the Japanese and the Germans all knew about the atomic bomb technology 2 years at least before the first atom bomb was dropped.

Not only has there been no nuclear war, there hasn't been any war between the major powers ever since.

What other presentations of false facts are you going to keep repeating?

You still have not explained why you value Japanese lives but place zero value on Chinese, American,Allies and Allied POWs lives..

Your messages are about the claim by so many "progressive" to prove they are enlightened by finding every possible way to condemn the USA and the history of the USA at their core. Otherwise you would not continue to post false claims after it pointed out they are false. It would seem that most Democrats feel they must wear badges of all the different ways they openly condemn and hate the USA and the USA's history.

Maybe his view is that we should still be firebombing Japanese cities and maybe another world war now of all of us firebombing each other's cities.

thank you for the correction in maths, the American public school system is very bad.

however the 4.34 billion was only given a 2 percent interest rate, so in 2006 the queen of england only paid America 7.5 billion as cited in the link below.

so according to your figure presented of 48.61 billion, she still owes us approximately 41 billion dollars of reparations for saving her kingdom in world war 2.

the atomic bomb should have been used to make America richer, instead it was used to make half of America poorer, and the other half richer with unfair trade and military protection to the same countries America saved.

An Unconditional Surrender allows the US to call the shots, dictating every possible facet of surrender to the Japanese, from prosecuting war criminals, to forcing the entire government to step down and creating a new government, to the creation of a new constitution for Japan, to total control over Japan's economy, to the payment of war reparations, and so on.

But we did not prosecute the Imperial family for war crimes....the only condition they requested. We wanted to use the bomb to make a point....and then we gave them their condition anyway

It was only the Imperial family that was given immunity AND the Emperor was stripped of all power. The condition they wanted was the Imperial government would remain intact, we did not agree and that was not part of the final surrender.

And yet no war crime trials for the imperial family. No Nuremburg trials for them. We gave them EXACTLY what they asked for.

That is 100% false. The Emperor was stripped of all power, the government was taken away from him and Imperial rule was ended.

Once again, there is no "them." Only the Emperor. "Them" did not want to surrender. "Them" wanted to put the Emperor under arrest so he could not surrender. In fact, the Emperor surrendered with NO conditions whatsoever. MacArthur decided he would use the Emperor solely as a figurehead to endorse the end of the Imperial and military rule system. Not for a moment did we ever agree that the Emperor would keep his rule over Japan.

Was the Emperor guilty of war crimes? Would we have let hitler off the hook? The emperor lived in luxury after the war. Tell me.....why?

President Trump has not ordered you executed. Therefore, you have EXACTLY everything you want from him. That is your logic.

He and his family were not put on trial because the megalomaniac MacArthur decided he would use the Emperor by extorting him and his entire family with their lives to endorse MacArthur's bizarre post-war Japan - including that we would forever pay to defend Japan as our ally without a military, for which he put in Japan's constitution Japan could never have a military. MacArthur was a true ego maniac who soon was demanding dropping atomic bombs on Russia and was fired for it.

The Emperor was basically under lifelong house arrest given how many in the military wanted to assassinate him for surrendering. So, the ONLY way Trump has NOT give you EXACTLY EVERYTHING YOU WANT - is that he has not had you locked in your home. If he did that, then you would have EXACTLY everything you want from Trump. Your endless bizarre logic messages.

I do not know if the Emperor committed war crimes or not because I do not know how much he was involved in any specifics and he may have been out of the loop. Japan did not have a strict hierarchy of command flowing to and from the Emperor from what I've seen.

No, Japan wanted us to surrender. That is what Japan wanted. However, other than locking you in your house by your own message President Trump has given you EXACTLY everything you want.

All those could have been and were part of the surrender negotiations. There was no reason to drop the bombs.

Troops were already being moved into staging areas for the assault on Kyushu, but, um, the use of nuclear weapon negated the need for any planned invasions.

"The most recent US experience bearing on the casualty question in the Pacific war was Okinawa. Japanese regular Army troops and naval ground-based defense forces on that island when it was invaded by US forces in April 1945 totaled some 75,000. Also on hand were about 25,000 civilian-paramilitary defenders and an unknown number of additional civilian volunteers. By the beginning of August the US casualties in the ongoing struggle on Okinawa had reached 49,000. (81)

Attacking Kyushu would have meant invading an island many times larger than Okinawa; southern Kyushu alone is well over twice Okinawa's size in square miles. Kyushu was initially expected to be garrisoned by Japanese ground combat forces roughly three-and-one-half times the size of the forces on Okinawa. (82) Kyushu also had a civilian augmentation potential many times greater than Okinawa's. The initial estimates by the Joint War Plans Committee and MacArthur's staff of casualties that would be incurred in capturing southern Kyushu (105,000-106,000) were a little more than twice the Okinawa total.

By the first week in August, the estimated total of Japanese Army and naval ground combat troops on Kyushu was more than six times what it had been on Okinawa. Intercepted communications had been showing Japanese preparations to employ the same kinds of suicide attacks and other unconventional tactics and devices that had caused so many casualties in the Okinawa operation. The number of US Army and Marine troops to be committed in the landing was about three times the force that had been launched against Okinawa. (83)

The anti-American crowd on this thread nearly without exception do not care how many Americans, Chinese or Allies would have been killed. Their position is - in reality - that the United States should have essentially surrendered so not to harm any Japanese and our military returned to an new purely isolationist United States, handing Japan and China over to Stalin and the USSR.

Some people on here are so bloodthirsty that they would use nuclear weapons for every minor conflict on the planet.....and then defend their use on here. Its sickening

Your "military experts" you claim must not be questions would have anyway.

By your reasons, if you had been president at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack and with Japan then having the superior navy and military force, you would have surrendered to Japan and agreed to anything including Japan occupying the United States and taking total control of the government, imprisoning and executing anyone they wanted to - PROVIDED Japan did not kill you as president or your family. If Japan had agreed to that, then Japan would have done EXACTLY want the United States wanted. You do post endless absurd logic messages - generally to the end of expressing hatred and contempt of the United States and favoring all enemies of the USA accordingly.

By your reason you would have used nuclear weapons in Vietnam, korea, grenada, Yugoslavia, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Oh and Syria. You would have saved a lot of American lives......right?

That is too ignorant a message to respond to. I'll just repeat you obviously would have used nuclear weapons in Korea because your "military expert" that must not be questions, MacArthur said we should.
