We know that about 22 million Americans are collecting disability insurance. We also know that many chronically unemployed Americans were given disability when their unemployment insurance terminated. We know that some quantity of Americans scam the welfare system. IMO a major issue keeping us from doing a better job with welfare assistance is our inability or refusal to properly qualify welfare recipients. As long as taxpayers are spending billion$ in welfare assistance, and as long as the system is grossly mismanaged, those who truly need assistance will be grouped with those who scam the system. But like everything else in life, it is doubtful we will force change...
Mowing grass, moving stuff, or cooking in the kitchen are jobs other seem to be able to do and maintain self-respect. Then again, a lot of them are in there for not paying their fines or court-ordered child support, so wise financial decision making may not be their forte to begin with
