My Italian grandmother and Armenian grandfather came here 100 years ago, learned English, worked hard, and opened a dry cleaners. My father was never taught to speak either Italian or Armenian because he was told to be an American and succeed a person has to speak English, he worked 2 jobs until my grandfather died and he took over the dry cleaners at which time he managed to open a second store. My grandparents and father didn't root for Italy during WW2, soccer games, ping pong tournaments, or tiddly winks. For my grandparents, coming to America was like getting married, they dedicated themselves to their new home and discarded their old lives except in memory. No one in my family ever leeched off the government.

Most Europeans learn English just as a matter of normal curriculum. They're also clean and articulate too.

Well, that's quite simple. Learn about American culture and participate in it. Leave the old world behind and change your primary allegiance to the U.S. Most of my family came from Scandinavia and Germany from 1850 to 1900. I'm a fourth and fifth generation American, depending on which side of the family we're talking about. I cannot name one Scandanavian or German custom. I'm fully "Americanized". When I was a kid, I played Little League baseball and was in the Boy Scouts. I've been to more church suppers than I can count. I've been to a Super Bowl and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I celebrated our Bicentennial in NYC in 1976. I'm completely American. And I'm not hyphenated. Oops ... I do have one cultural link to the old world ... I go to an Oktoberfest every September. But that's it. I don't speak German and I don't demand voting instructions in German.
