I don't get why people stay if they have a choice -- a car and gas money. Now would be a good time for a vacation to Dallas or OKC.
There is a Whataburger just a couple of blocks down the street from my house in Austin. An original A frame. I am starting to get hungry right now.
What a stupid thing to say! The Democrat mayor of Houston should step down. He completely misjudged the situation despite all the warnings.
Thought and prayer leads to action. I donated to the Salvation Army, they seem to be on the ground now meeting immediate needs. This is day three, this is where it starts getting hairy for those in extremis. Act!
Seems to be moving back into gulf. Hopefully will change course when it moves back... but NO better watch out.
Uh, I don't need prayers to know when someone needs help....... Would the Salvation Army have stayed home if you hadn't donated?
No, but they now have a few dozen more hot meals to serve. Probably a couple hundred bottles of water and a few more personal heigene kits.
I'm just paying it back. Durring Irene here in Vermont the Salvation Army had a useful presence and filled a void. For Vermont Irene was a flooding event as well. For those who lost homes the Salvation Army provided clothing, not a used, but all new. They also fed the affected that were cut off from other help.
I would like to mention how refreshing it is that the National Guard and their equipment is able to help during this time of need as opposed to pushing sand around in foreign deserts.
I'm going to have to amend my post. Based on the amount of rain that has already fallen and the amount still predicted to fall this will almost certainly be classified as an event with an expected recurrence interval of at least 100 years over a widespread area and even 500 years in more confined areas that include Houston itself. Actually, several of the watershed gauges (particularly Cypress Creek) in Harris county are already at or predicted to exceed 500yr recurrence levels.
Still looking good at my spot in the La Porte area which is southeast Houston. Bayou's and ditches doing their jobs and draining fast during lull's in the rainfall. Still no street flooding here and power through the event. As it moves east and we get out of the dirty side, we will probably start to here news about major flooding in Beaumont and the Louisiana area, they are getting hit hard with the type of bands we were getting the last few days. Very similar situation to Tropical Storm Allison.
Well there's been a break in the rain. The water levels backed off enough to get out of Houston so we decided to go check on our lakehouse up in Livingston. This has been my first chance to see the city since Friday night. It's insane. Edit: We can't get that far north. I always shop at HEB. It's headquartered here in Texas. We're not a bunch of victims down here. That's why we'll always vote red.
