I think you could make the same argument for slavery, which is what those sweatshops you think are so great amount to.
You think people work in sweatshops by choice? Kids especially? That would be a naive view of it. These are poor people and children being exploited under terrible conditions because they lack legal protections. Given the overall conditions, it is practically slavery with the pretense of being something else.
If life at "sweatshops" really suck so much, why don't the employees just quit their job and take a better one? Afterall, Third Worlders have been able to survive without "sweatshops" for 1000's of years, so guess that means a small farm with one cow and bad climate pays a "living wage" too, no? As far as I am concerned the actual "sweatshops" are the domestic factories and the Western companies are pure luxury in comparison. Things are not perfect, but claiming it is slavery is an outrageous claim with marxistoid undertones.
I don't think children would spend the majority of their day in a factory if they felt they had a choice, and children in particular often do not have one. These people are being exploited in places lacking human rights protections; they don't elect their leaders and they don't control their economic situation nearly as much as we fat, complacent, clueless Americans do. Why can't they have a 40 hours work week and better wages, and protections against child labor? You think because their starting situation is so bad, it's OK to work them to death for pennies? Just because they'll put up with it, it's A-OK? You say they have a choice, yet we've heard of workers in some factories opting to commit suicide! Gee, I wonder why they didn't just leave?
I do not think most children would like to walk the slums of San Salvador sniffing clue either. As I have said, there are problems and sometimes it is indeed horrifying. However, "sweatshop" is a prejorative term that seldom holds any truth to it at all. As been mentioned, the multinational companies who build factories in unindustrialised countries usually offer relatively good working conditions. Do you think the First World always had the kind of conditions we have today? No, it took years and ages to build what we have. When we were unindustrialised, we had the same, if not even worse, kind of working conditions the "sweatshops" of today offer. If you care so much you can boycot the companies using "sweatshops" and just hire a private tailor. Oh, that's too expensive you say? Well, then just shut up.
YES! Those children won't eat unless they work.Their parents have too many kids (which may even be 1) who they can't feed. Their Govts need then to have Forced Birth Control, like China did. In the meantime, no work, no eat. There are no other jobs, or reasons for cos to employ low/no-skilled workers. +
I wonder if the same misguided people are also against construction jobs or any laborious outdoor job in America where you sweat a lot and don't make much money.
I am against any job where the employer doesn't pay the employee a fair wage while making huge profits
What is a "fair wage"? That is such a bogus term. Only the employee himself can judge what a "fair wage" is because it is entirely subjective.
Well, kind of. They need entrepreneurs because entrepreneurs create jobs. Lol. The opponents of "sweatshops" (yes, I will keep putting that in quotations because the term is biased) often have very hasty conclusions about the matter. How helping people off the streets, taking them away from begging, stealing, awful farm-work and prostitution can be "exploitation" is really beyond me. It is a very Socialistic argument by, as you mention, comfortable office-rats who've have never spent a day in manual labour and only been in their cosy college chairs and heated office spaces.
How about an "anti-sweatfarm movement" for you guys? Do you have any idea how hard farming in Sub-Saharan Africa or rural India is? You have to break a few bones and have a few children dead either at birth and/or from bad health/starvation (you need alot of them to help on your farm). Horrible working conditions that do not even get you enough food for the day, but you only attack the Western factories that help these people to feed their families because you hate Free market-Capitalism. Not because you actually care about the people in question. If you really care, why don't you just ship them 10$ of your income each month? The problem is that these crypto-commies never ask themselves why the factory workers choose to apply for jobs at "sweatshops" when the salary and conditions are so bad. And the truth is that a job at the "sweatshop" is the best alternative. But, perhaps you are one of those crypto-imperialistic closet-racists as well who think an El Salvadoran woman is not smart enough to know what is best for her and her children and instead needs Western schools and experts to help and guide her poor, savage mind to evolve? Disgusting! I suggest all of you crypto commies check this out; https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12122-006-1006-z The 'Third World' needs more foreign investors to raise the living standard. The reason "sweatshops" do not have to pay Cambodians a Euro-standard salary is because there is no real competition. Furthermore, it is rather naive to look at the issue from an utopian lens. Poverty is not fun, but not everyone can be rich. Poverty is relative and Swedish anthropologist Sten Hagberg (whose lectures I have had the honour to attend) has done excellent work proving so in his fieldstudy, Poverty in Burkina Faso. Additionally, It is never the 'Third Worlders' themselves who protest. It is always and only snarky and smug college professors from 'The West' who do so. You should feel sorry for the poor and it is always nice to show compassion for suffering factory workers in East Asia. But, at the same time you should celebrate that their evil governments have finally come to their senses and are now, slowly, opening up their market allowing foreign investment. As I have already said, all you entitled virtue-signalers should boycot Nike, H&M etc and hire your own tailors to put these "evil sweatshops" out of business. Or even better, since it is the workers you care about, why not pay 200$ extra next time you buy your sneakers and 100$ extra when you buy a new shirt? If anyone is a hypocrite it is you guys, not Ivanka Trump, Beyonce and all the other celebs and companies who open factories in 'Third World'-countries.
Yes and there were interviews with slaves back in the 1800's where the slave said they were grateful for being allowed to be a slave Did not make it right, moral or ethical
That comparison is still as idiotic as it was the first time. Slaves worked against their will. "Sweatshop workers" are there by choice.
Oooooh! I would say a "living wage" you know one that allows you to at least be at a minimum poverty level
Trump agrees with this. He wants to cease trade with China. All you merchantlist "anti-sweatshoppers" should be Pro-Trump.
Ivanka is just one of a number of Americans getting rich off of exploitation of foriegn workers In 2013 a factory in Bangladesh collasped burying over 1,000 workers There was no "victim compensation" there was no reason these people needed to die just so some twonk in a first world country can have a luxury yacht sailing the Carribean
