I love the Cup Festival, love horse racing and gambling. Cup Week brings in lots of tourist dollars, money into the racing industry (which doesn't look as though it'll be automated for a while), money to the caterers, brewers, dressmakers, milliners, shops, and maybe glovemakers too. It makes tax money for the government through the TAB. Few places of employment don't run a Cup Sweep. It also has a downside. Glorification of an industry which wastes many healthy animals (admittedly these animals wouldn't be bred if there weren't a demand by the racing industry) which aren't fast enough, encouragement of gambling, drunkenness, sometimes animal cruelty, and other undesirable effects. Thoughts?
I hate horse racing, all gambling actually, ruins so many lives, family's, careers etc. I have never watched it, wouldn't know a horses name even.
Wasn't Churchill and FDR yobbos? I do believe we have lost respect for being a balanced lush. Or do I misunderstand yobbo? Does it require a rowdy element beyond drunkenness? BTW some years ago at an Academy Award dinner the Aussies, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and I forget who else managed to get themselves all at one table. It was fabled for its' loudness and boisterousness. Was it the yobbos table?
I live in a big horse racing town, we even have our own track, despite this I'm not a big fan. I think they're going to have to clean up the Melbourne cup, it's turned into a drinking festival...a bit disgraceful I think, if I were to attend a racing event on Tuesday it would be the one in town, not so many drunk people and you still get to experience the spirit of the racing event. Horse racing in Australia in the last few years have been hampered by the use of drugs by some horse trainers, it costs those who do not use drugs on their horses hundreds of thousands of dollars because they continue to lose against those who use drugs... they're going to have to clean up the drugs and the alcohol in horse racing http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spo...g/news-story/2a4fc09aaef717e5f76ef5a3345c60b6
The Racing Industry (and its fans) in Australia is strictly for the moneyed bogan. Meantime, all horse racing is an animal cruelty abomination, and gambling is for the birds.
That's what bogans do. The females buy a spray on tan (they think it's still 1990, bless 'em), don slapper heels, and put something outlandish on their 1990's hair. They then proceed to drink like the trailer trash that they are. The males shave as closely as possible, apply man-fume (aftershave), and don tight suits. They hope that the orange slappers will drop their fascinator for them.
I used to live near Randwick. The condition of a significant number of men and many more young women is quiet frankly, disgusting.
Getting drunk isn't confined to horse racing venues. People take drugs to enhance sporting performance.
Horse racing and in particular The Melbourne Cup, Straya Day, New Years Eve and several other more local or specific events like the Tamworth Country Music Festival seem to give a certain element the freedom to act in the most disgusting ways in public and obtain some sort of kudos from it. Are isn't romance sweet? Is that a child? Oh and please note they are environmentally conscious (when conscious). Recycle bags!! Hey mum .. dad, I met this really cool guy. Every dad needs a picture of his little girl all growed up for his brag book or office desk. When not celebrating these events most are holidaying in Bali but unfortunately, they do also perform their disgusting antics in other countries. What a fine body of young Australians, brings a lump to ya throat Aussie Aussie Aussie
I love those comments and explanations, yes that's what we are and known as. And these photos speak for themselves, unfortunately. I spent a few days in Edinburgh recently, not hard to tell were our party spirit comes from..... Hope no one is offended! Reg.
