Do you remember how very recently many in this forum arrogantly told about "backward" Russia? I wonder - these statements were due to mental inferiority or because of the incredible arrogance?

What do you think about it?

    P\S:
According to the latest statistics published in the US this week, retail sales in the country grew in December for the sixth consecutive month - although expectations were not entirely justified - growth slowed to 0.3 percent compared to the previous month.
With the level of personal savings at the 10-year low, the opportunities for American consumers are completely exhausted: this last surge in spending appears to be fueled by loans, as credit card borrowings have reached record levels.

But last month, another important milestone in the history of global consumerism was noted: as the Washington Post notes, China is equal to the US in terms of domestic retail sales, according to data collected by Mizuho.
Meanwhile, in some important categories, China even overtook the United States: for example, 17.6 million cars were sold in the USA in 2016, but this was much less than the 24 million cars sold in China.

Yeah...it's a very nice couple of bridges (part of the crossing is over an existing island).

But I would hardly call it an 'engineering masterpiece'. Especially in light of all the other longer bridges in existence.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_bridges

    But they are nice bridges.

Congratulations on almost finishing a 13km bridge. Russia now joins the ranks of other 'non backward' nations like Malaysia, Thailand, India, Peru, Vietnam & Egypt which have all managed to build bridges longer than this over the past 30+ years. Malaysia has one that looks just like this - built in 1985 (I've driven it. Quite nice).

Of course, actual grown up nations that don't feel the need to tell everyone how wonderful they are for almost completing something that even 3rd world nations can manage, have been building bridges that dwarf this for decades. The Americans have a collection of bridges 2-3 times this length, and China puts up bridges like this for fun. In fact, it puts up bridges ten times this long for fun.

But hey, if patting yourself on the back & telling yourself this is proof Russia isn't 'backward' does it for you then go right ahead. While you are at it, see if you can get male life expectancy above 3rd world levels. That would be an achievement.

It's a good project that connects Crimea directly to Russia.

On a side note, Russia and Japan are in talks about a bridge/tunnel project linking the two countries. Now that would be impressive if it comes about. Overland travel would then be possible from western Europe to Japan.

Why are you calling the Russia Federation Soviets? The Soviet Union was a globalist political system that disregarded national sovereignty and is similar what Soros and his liberal new world order freaks in Washington are trying to impose on the world today.

The difference is that our system is a corporate one, where everything is owned by a few families, and the Soviet one was a communal one, where everything was owned by the state.

Very nice, however I am wondering about the $3 billion price tag (as opposed to $10 billion in the US) did you use North Korean labour?

I also find some irony in building a bridge to Crimea.... Russia burned so many bridges when they occupied Crimea

The interesting thing about the Crimean bridge, is that when Putin was asked, he said that it's not expected to last for 100 years, but for 1000 years. ..and he's not joking. He doesn't follow the American principal of constructing things only for a short time so that they can break down and create more jobs. This is why our infrastructure is such a mess today.

I say this because when 50 billion was invested in Socchi for the Olympic games, (most paid by the oligarchs), it was done with the intent that nothing would be made cheaply and end up being torn down like they are in other nations that hold the games. Instead all the accommodations for the athletes and guests were sold later on as permanent residences. This is why the athletes said they were the best accommodations they ever had.

Also much of Socchi's infrastructure was rebuilt so that it could accommodate the large hotels needed to turn it into a first class resort... which it now is.

Oh for heavens sake, will you people get off it. Does this look like a backwards nation? This by the way is the Kremlin.

Good old Italians. The palaces really aren't suited to the climate, but oddly enough Felix Yussopov said the only time he felt cold was when he was at Oxford. I did notice those beautiful delft tiled stoves in the corners of the palaces. I guess keeping them warm and comfortable was another bit of Italian ingenuity.

The wealth though was phenomenal, and contrary to the British propaganda, a British traveler said the peasants were much better off than the Irish when it was still part of Britain.

The Russian churches are a little too grand... unless we go back to the Byzantine Empire and Saint Sophia. But the Russian churches have onion domes. :blowkiss:

You did not understand. :roflol::roflol::roflol: The bridge is secondary. The main thing is that Crimea is part of Russia. And the next bridge will be built by Russians in Alaska. At the same time, I think that this is not long to wait.:nana:

The bridge to Alaska is (not regarding the policy) an interesting project. But it will require a lot roads built in north-eastern part of Russia about the same length as Transsib. Very costly. But very interesting. This is the second out of the most difficult bridges which is needed to built to connect all the continents of the planet. The most difficult will be the task to connect Australia.

I own and run a small corporation. Do you realize that there are millions of people like me that do the same thing. Most of the large corporations are public. That means the shareholders are the public. I think you are just anti-business. It is a strange position because business creates every nickel of our wealth.

Why do we need a bridge between Alaska and Siberia?

The westerners don't react to the topic because they were not a part of this 'special Olympics'. As long as Ukrainian and Russian citizens speak Russian and visit the same web-sites the Internet is full of discussions about this bridge. Ukrainian 'patriots' had tons of technical information that the bridge is impossible to build (the one tried under hitler was destroyed by ice) and Russian 'patriots' tell that even it is impossible it will be done. This is where it all comes from.
