1 per 100k is statistically insignificant, obviously.

Fail. Other methods of committing suicide are less likely to be successful. Thus, substituting other methods results in a lower overall suicide rate.

"Using a variety of techniques and data we estimate that a 1% increase in the household gun ownership rate leads to a .5 to .9% increase in suicides....

"Put differently, when gun ownership decreases other methods of suicide increase. Substitution among methods is not perfect, however, so when gun ownership decreases we see a big decrease in gun-suicide and a substantial but less than fully compensating increase in non-gun suicide so a net decrease in the number of suicides."

Doubling down on dumb arguments I see.

The suicide rate in Australia is SUCCESSFUL suicides, you see.

That means they are effectively killing themselves at TWICE the rate of non-gun suicides in the US.

Seems like they're managing to kill themselves with things other than guns exceedingly well.

So does France. So does South Korea. So does Japan. So does Belgium. So does Finland. So does 50 other countries.

Statistically insignificant has a very specific meaning which I don't think you understand.

But not as well as if they had guns.

Just where do the guns that illegal owners have come from?

So what you're saying is that the vast difference in firearm ownership between the US and Australia caused by the horrible, terrible, super-dangerous GUNZ is......

    One per 100,000 people.

Kinda melodramatic let down you just gave me.

    No, it's true.

Most criminals get their firearms through straw sales of family members and girlfriends.

I just tried to add some humorous facts to the mix.

So much for vman12's claim that the difference between the US's and Australia's suicide rate is statistically insignificant. I found it to be significant even at the .01 level when I filled in the data.

    Oh yeah?

What did you put in for sample size 1 and sample size 2, then what did you put in for proportions for 1 and 2?

According to the CDC firearms are the number one method of suicide in the U.S. for 2015, the last year I could find stats for. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/nvsr.htm
In 2015 there were 44,193 suicides. Those methods that made the top three were: 6,816 from poisoning 11,855 from hanging, strangulation, suffocation and 22,018 suicides from guns. Those suicides by gun account for approximately 65% of gun deaths in the U.S.

The sample sizes are the populations of each nation: 320000000 and 20000000.

Proportions (not sure that these are actually the correct proportions but vman12 claims they are):
    .0001 (10 per 100,000)
    .00011 (11 per 100,000)

A .01 significance level means the probability of the observed difference being a fluke is no more than 1%. So we can be 99% confident that the difference is real.

    To quote my friend Vegas:
You may not be but it seems most of us arguing the issues in the gun control forum are from the U.S.

    Oh good grief.

What you're suggesting is that the US, which is swimming in guns, and Australia, which is not has a 1 per 100k difference in suicide rate and that it's caused by firearms.

That's less than a 10% difference in suicide rate between the two countries. We're not testing for "random chance".

If guns cause that 1 per 100k difference, then why is the suicide rate in France and Belgium HIGHER than the US?

Oh, and I gave you the link to the WHO suicide rates from 2015. Go look at them.

They will require the appropriation of more than one trillion dollars to the budget of the ATF, just to hire a sufficient number of agents to make enforcement of those paperwork requirements a possibility.
