We now know because of information Durandal gave that the police say this was just a formality and they will be very surprised if the old man is charged with anything bringing up what I said before that in the UK you have the right to use necessary force to protect yourself even if the necessary force needed results in the death of the criminal. What you are not allowed to do is just cold blooded murder of them.

It's called being prepared. A bit cliché, but better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. I live out in the country, the nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away. The police are miles away. I have not needed it, but I am prepared if I do. I enjoy my life, don't live in constant fear as you portray it, because I know I have a way to defend me and mine if I needed to.

A wee bit hyperbole on the living in fear thing, but if it makes you feel better about not being able to defend yourself and trusting that someone else will do it for you, that's your choice.

Yes, I live in a rural area and the police will always arrive after the crime, if I am around to see them. So I do not live in fear, hanging onto my 1911 Colt 45. In fact, owning that gun and being a good marksman, and not coming apart under fire, as I proved to myself long ago in SE Asia keeps me with a great feeling of security here in the sticks. I am old, and cannot fight younger intruders, but Colt made me an equalizer. I love him for that. And it is the real american way.
