What safety features that would enhance the usefulness of the rifle to a militia?

Now you are just going in circles!

We already established the usefulness of the information contained in a firearms registry.

The Constitution grants Congress the power to REGULATE and that INCLUDES firearms!

It only grants specific powers to regulate. Any power not listed in the Constitution is not granted. See Amendments 9 and 10.

Which NRA disinformation source provided that load of bovine excrement?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia_organizations_in_the_United_States

The registry is of all firearms irrespective of whatever organization anyone belongs to.

The objective of having such databases is because it becomes possible to cross reference them with other databases.

For instance if the types of firearms injuries from a certain type of firearm caused greater injury or death rates then there would be justification for healthcare insurers to raise the premiums of those who kept those types of firearms in their homes.

You are entitled to your opinion on the matter however that does not make a firearms registry unconstitutional.

Furthermore there MUST be some value to such a registry given the rabid opposition to it displayed by the NRA whenever such a topic is proposed.

Already cited Justice Scalia affirming the constitutional right of Congress to regulate firearms.

According to 10 USC 246, the unorganized militia of the United States consists of all males age 18-45. Acording to CDC WISQARS data, that demographic is about 60 million men. Were you unaware of 10 USC 246 and the unorganized militia?

Neither my health care insurers nor my homeowners insurer even ask if I have guns in the home.

    Wrong!

Congress was specifically granted the POWER TO REGULATE.

The onus is entirely on YOU to prove that firearms were excluded from being regulated.

The FACT that Congress passed the Militia Acts PROVES that Congress does have that power.

" A Democratic congressman has proposed outlawing “military-style semiautomatic assault weapons” and forcing existing owners to sell their weapons or face prosecution, a major departure from prior gun control proposals that typically exempt existing firearms".

Congress was specifically granted the power to regulate the "organization, arms and discipline" of the militia in Article 1, Section 8. Howefer, you seem to have a misunderstanding of how the Constitution works. There is no blanket power to "regulate" granted to Congress; only those powers specifically enumerated in the Constitution are actually granted. The onus lies then with those who would claim that Congress has any Constitutional power to regulate the firearms of the People.

How many of those 60 million are aware that they are part of the 60 million?

And given that it is restricted to those aged 17 to 45 the odds of finding 3 million AR-15's sounds like it just an NRA fantasy.

Insurers don't currently ask because there is no firearms registry nor data on the types of injuries caused by the various types of firearms.

However they DO ask about the VEHICLES that you own because they DO have information regarding their safety and injury rates.

If the information is available then insurers will make use of it to limit their risks.

What safety features would you require to specifically enhance the safety of children?

So now you are pretending that the late Justice Scalia was NOT an authority on the Constitutional powers of Congress to regulate firearms?

I suggest that you take it up with the SCOTUS because none of the other justices disagreed with his statement.

So you are saying children should be left defenseless against attackers, how sick is that?

Their ignorance does not change the reality of the law. Congress has the power to REGULATE the militia, and by the powers that were specifically enumerated in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution they have done so, and that current regulation can be found in 10 USC 246.

So why are you wanting to look for them to register them? You never did answer my question - now that we have this information, what informed decision on the arms of the militia do you wish to make?

Most gun deaths are suicides, and all guns are sufficently powerful to allow someone to commit suicide. We know that rifles are more powerful than handguns for the most part, and that shotguns used a close range produce heinous wounds beyond that of a handgun or rifle. We know that the homicide deaths due to rifles and shotguns aren't even 10% of the homicide deaths caused by handguns.

All firearms are sufficiently suitable for suicide, yet insurers don't even ask if there is a gun in the home. They won't even insure for suicide or homicide, anyway.

Would those features reduce the utility of the firearm with regards to self defense? If so, then any such regulation would run afoul of Heller.

"Impossible" seems like a Herculean task.

You mean like the "impossible" task of making cars safer today than they were in the 1960's and 70's?

Is it impossible to crash a car? You didn't say reduce the chances of a child firing a gun; you said impossible.

In the last ten years, almost 12,000 children age 18 and under have died as a passenger in a motor vehicle. 1000 have died in unintentional gun shootings.

What do you suggest to reduce the number of children dying in car wrecks, which seems to be a bigger problem?
