That's a good assessment, would play well in Hollywood's black and openly gay community, probably more broadly and elsewhere too. Hard to see whether such an excuse would gain much public support, likely it would depend on one's perception of the threat racism and homophobia, which in this instance was evidently magnified by a hoax. Ultimately:

The truth is that there is racism and homophobia, and more of it in "MAGA country", it isn't as true that Trump has brought this about. It is also true that in this case there was a hoax, it was planned with deliberation and premeditated to falsely atribute blame to people who support Trump, arrangements were made to acquire the instrumentalities and the location to stage the event was scouted, the assailants were paid to perform and rehearsed their roles. Smollet then made the false police report, falsely answered police questions and made successive media appearances to further the hoax.

How one perceives this just depends on the concern one has over racism and homophobia, one's impression of its prevalence in "MAGA country" and if one believes Trump encourages this.

 

If there was racism and homophobia in "MAGA country" whereever that is, then one wouldn't need to make up false reports about it.

So, one of the attackers was Smollett's Personal Trainer. The other one was the PT's brother that was an extra on the show. They were both from Nigeria and black.

But yet, Smollett claims he did not know his (white?) assailants and it was a racially and homophobic Hate Crime.

Sounds like Smollett is either complicit in the attack or the brothers really had an ax to grind with Smollett. I wonder how they knew that Smollett was going to Subway at 2 a.m. Though, I do know some Personal Trainers that would be pretty upset if their "trainee" was going to Subway.

I'd expect "MAGA country" is basically the "red states" (wherever Trump prevailed on election day and to the degree he prevailed). Chicago certainly isn't "MAGA country" (the reason for my first disbelief). Until this detail emerged (I remember it was a bit 'wobbly' at first) I thought Smollet was the victim of "a modern day lynching" attempt too. The "this is MAGA country" exclamation first caused my incredulity.

On whether there is more racism and homophobia in "MAGA country" is more nuanced. Minorities and homosexuals are not as embraced, nor is their inclusion as encouraged in some places -even outside "MAGA country". In New York and California the government actively promotes, pays for and hosts transexual minority readings (in "drag") of stories to pre-k children in school, this sort of thing is not as encouraged in "MAGA country".

The need for fake hate crimes highlighting racism and homophobia is due to the perceived inadequate embracing of minorities and homosexuals, the goal is to have all communities realize the need for and actively encourage the inclusion of victimized minorities, particularly in places where the perception of any need to do so is low. The fake hate crimes are staged where they are because this is where those who perceive a need to highlight them live and work. Though it would make more sense to stage these hoaxes in actual "MAGA country" the perpetrators aren't that intelligent and the locals know what is going on.

 

Sounds like a lot of speculation on what is happening in "MAGA" Country...which by the way is the vast majority of the UNited States by your own defination.

So it's ok to create hoaxes, file false police reports, and lie because it brings attention to something you view is happening...even though there would be no need for a hoax if that were in fact true.

 

Good news now Booker has decided to actually consider evidence and not rushing to judgement... Of course this was after he did the opposite and tried to gain politically by calling it a "lynching".

 

How has this been confirmed? Smollett or one or both of the Nigerians confessed?
