The Smollett hoax has deepened my distrust in the media.

Maybe you shouldn’t have omitted that important fact from your post.

All the more so, since this story existed almost entirely within the right wing media bubble for two or three days, until Smollett was exposed as a fake.

The the Trumpster crowd, it was yet another "fake news" claim (a claim they made before they knew it was a faked). It feed their persecution complex, which is why 80% of the commentary on it here was all right wingers working at being outraged.

To everyone else, it was an obscure incident between an actor looking for attention and a couple of clowns on the street. Hardly newsworthy in any real sense.

 

The average John and Jane knew the Smollett story had a ring of untruth to it. So did the media. So did the police. But the media and many other Trump-hate mongers wanted it to be true so they refused to question it. If you believed his story then I suggest you discuss your Trump-hate and also your gullibility with your psychiatrist.

 

The story was called out by people right here on this forum as not passing the smell test. For the media, it certainly passed the opportunity test just fine.

 

This one has witnesses. The guy that committed the crime was foiled in his getaway as he had brought his mother with him and she was still shopping, which meant our perp had to stay in the parking lot until the police arrived and arrested him. Word to the wise, if you are going to take one of your parents on your crime spree while shopping, take Dad, he is far less likely to get sidetracked by a good sale at the clothing counter and foil your getaway.

 

Let's not pretend that the accusation the culprits were wearing MAGA hats didnt drive media to report more aggressively. Racist, homophobic, Trump supporters. The perfect narrative for the media who has an agenda.

The media broke the story that it was a hoax. He is now being crucified by the media. He lied. Is that too complicated for you?

And through the liberal politicians statements defending him to them retracting them.

 

My whole thing is that they have lost skepticism and integrity. Of course the story was too far-fetched. They should have realized that.

 

The point is they weren't skeptical, as they should be. My bullshit detector realized that something was off with the story. Their job is to be a bullshit detector for the rest of us. They should have had healthy skepticism.

 

You haven't been following the story, have you? The latest in this story is that the two guys that supposedly beat him up were actually two black actors who had worked on Empire with him. He paid them to perpetrate this hoax.

 

the media's job is to report, which they did, you think they should of hid this story from the public

What apparently is complicated is understanding that the narrative presented included specific details to continue to perpetuate that the right is racist, homophobic, violent, etc. And that narrative was a perfect fit for the MSM agenda.

Do you really think that a guy having a few scratches on his face after being out in Chicago in the middle of the night, a city with far more violent and more numerous crimes than was claimed... every single night, would be newsworthy without a) the alleged MAGA hat element, or b) the coincidental anti lynching legislation that the "victim" was a demonstrated activist for?

The national news was swamped with this, leading Democrat politicians tweeting about it and the other side calling "hoax." What has happened is that in a frenzy to create false victims and attack the sitting Administration, real victims are totally passed over. Then the backlash involves similar propaganda... all at the expense of an objectively informed public. That's not "news" it's not "journalism" it's propaganda plain and simple. Everyone of any stripe should be outraged that this special, protected class of "the press" has become by and large pure propaganda.

1. No "press" organization that also provides entertainment and Op-ed should have press protections, regardless of slant.
2. No "press" organization should be directly or indirectly owned by concentrasted, monied interests and receive press protections; no single person or entity should be allowed to own more than 5% of a "press" outlet and remain protected by press protections.

 

The media accepted the story as Gospel, then they used it to lecture us about how racist and homophobic Trump supporters are. And it was all based on a bogus lie.

They made the shootings out to be something they weren't. "Hands Up Don't shoot" come to mind? They got cops killed because the MSM convinced BLM members the cops are out to randomly shoot unarmed innocent black people, which is fracking insane!!!

The media INVENTS the narrative and runs with it without any considering or care if its true or not. There are no gate keepers. CNN won't call out MSNBC. The NYT won't call out CBS or Huffington Post. Apologies are buried or not even considered, because why should they apologize? They didn't do anything wrong. Its OK to lie when you agree with it.

Lets see how much it bites them in the end, once people don't give a **** about what they have to say any more.

the news reported on Trump tower meeting, even the false narratives provided by the Trump's... then as more comes out, they report that new info too

let's just hope justice is done, if he was making false police reports having him talk to the media will help the da prove their case - would like the brothers to talk to the media too

 

Apparently it was seen as newsworthy, given the amount of coverage it received and not just from FOX.

And to democrats, or everyone else, I think you really understated what this story was to them. We don't seem to live on the same planet. ha ha

Of course lots of astute people, and not necessarily right side people, smelled a dead fish, from just the info we were given about the alleged attack. It looked more like what a script writer from the left would write instead of reality.
