All the mailboxes I can see from my porch are on a 4x4 post... except mine.

    Should I get a 4x4?

Donate a case of Pabst to the local punks to play 4x4 mailbox baseball.
Of course it would be too much fun and make you an accessory to a federal crime.
But you can still dream - this will help:

Am thinking about a greenhouse with the old windows. Got windows from the old house too. But one thing at a time. I find it better to finish one job before starting another. Except inside jobs to do when it is raining.

I'm thinking that I should get something exotic for a mailbox post. Any ideas? I don't have room for a restored farm tractor. I need something small.

I wonder what old water pumps go for.

Never given it much thought...but an old water pump sounds good....or maybe a new pump that looks old.

What kind of post is yours on? One of those fancy cast iron used to be house railing things?

Kind of. It's about as cheap as you could imagine. It's two pieces of square steel tubing with a simple 'S' shaped filigree in between.

An old truck camshaft. A Cummins mechanic gave me one. A fine arts major thought it was metal sculpture. ;-)

A mailbox post needs to be at least 5 foot long.
A cam shaft is around 1/3rd that length.

    I don't think that's true for a semi-truck motor.

Anyway, it could be put on a base.

I don't think Cummins makes camshafts for pickups. Mine was well over 4ft long and as heavy as it looked.
