Even Spanish-speaking immigrants do learn English in order to get along here. English is our lingua franca, the language of wider communication. But it does not have official status by force of law, and our agencies accommodate speakers of many languages by providing translation services.

Plenty of immigrants continue to use their native language here, but they also learn English. I've got free Russian publications that I picked up from a Russian market a little while back. They advertise all sorts of services in Russian, such as legal services by Russian-speaking lawyers, denture services by "European Denture Center," other Russian-speaking markets, health services, travel services, you name it. Do you think these Russian immigrants "don't bother" to learn English? Or do you think they are just more comfortable using their native language when they can, especially for important matters like health and legal services?

You sound so fearful and hateful, the way you go on about immigrants and language. Do learn another language. Maybe even go to where that language is spoken for a while. Maybe then you will appreciate the challenges that immigrants face.

 

some do. but just as many don't. how many times do you see on the news the heartwrenching stories of families being "ripped apart by trump" and how outrageous it because they've been here for 15 years and then cut to the sobbing mother who tells us how sad she is... through a translator. because in 15 years she never bothered to make a go at learning the lingua franca.

those speakers and translations should be paid for by the non-english speaker, not the taxpayers. hence the point of this thread, i believe. and the state should conduct its business in english. if private organizations want to provide translations at their expense for those who refuse to learn english, that is their right.

again, this is the private sector. they can communicate in any language they wish. but the business of the state should be conducted in english with the burden placed on the non-english speaker, not the state and the taxpayer.

again, i am not the topic of this thread. how do you knew i don't appreciate the challenges immigrants face? how do you know that i'm not an immigrant? millions of immigrants have been welcomed by americans just like me over the past two centuries and made learning english their top priority. they have gone on to make america great by their accomplishments and their contributions to our culture... one that we used to call a melting pot. one common thread that unites people is language. when you finally realize your lifelong dream of being invited to emigrate to the usa, you should not have to shed your heritage, culture, and native tongue, but you should make learning english your top priority.
