Do you means Ports of Entry? A "checkpoint" is the term used for areas normally patrol because it is a place where illegal crossings take place.

While I agree with you that DEA said that drugs mostly enter at Ports of Entry, I have not seen where where anybody has said that illegal immigrants many cross at those locations.

 

Considering multiple sources have said that the number one source of illegal immigrants are visa overstays, yes the majority of illegal immigrants come in through points of entry.

The vast majority of visa overstays leave the country within a few months of overstay.

The reason is they are "on the books" and can be denied citizenship in the future if they refuse to return home.
