Given what happened in New Zealand, it is not surprising that Australia has just passed this law: Australia passes social media law penalising platforms for violent content

    Excerpt:

And Australia has, unlike the US, already some rather restrictive gun-laws. But neither does the US have any means of controlling/overseeing media content that may be provocative.

And yet, the gravity of the shooting in Christchurch (50 dead) has yet to be beaten in the US. But, that's probably just a question of time ...

Honestly I think this is ridiculous, how are they going to retain executives when they are facing imprisonment for the failures of their staff. It's a world first for a reason... there's always one dickhead.

And yet, we can turn on our idiot boxes any day or nite of the week and watch murder and violence literally at the drop of a hat, and nothing is done.....oh wait...we have censorship categories....they have been
around for decades....oh wait...what about violent video games that our kids use 24/7....but when it comes to upsetting islam....no...shut it down...we cant allow that...
nothing to do with violence...its the suppression of anything which upsets islam....
Why, I ask, has it taken this massacre in NZ to pass this legislation..hasnt there been sufficient
violence worldwide which has been filmed in the past to create this legislation prior to now....
Maybe its our parasitical politicians who want to be the first to enact such legislation...
How insecure they must be to want to be first....how pathetic are they.....

Because people do not provoke their legislatures to "do something" until it happens (and makes headlines).

And, in the US, the reaction is visceral and led by the National Rifle Association, of which it WikiP entry notes this:
The above sums it up - that is, if you think that the US is going to be overrun by a belligerent foreign power (say Canada or Mexico) then "the people" must be prepared to defend their country. With shotguns!

Your chances of getting shot with a gun are higher in the US than dying from most any other accident:

As seen above, it is mostly personal illness that accounts for more deaths than guns ...

Where does that notion come from?

Do you have an example to explain it further? Failures of staff? Give an example, please ...

Leading cause of death? 17 other causes comes first. And it doesn't seem to include everything.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/medical-errors-now-3rd-leading-cause-of-death-in-u-s-study-suggests/

I think we have more foreigners whining about US gun laws than native gun grabbers. Bloomberg must be spreading his money around all over the place.

    That's a good laugh.

I've never laughed so hard since the day I was walking by a Mcdonalds, and I was roped-in then force-fed a BigMac ... ;^)

I'm sure of it ... given that you (plural) have such a high percentage of yourselves with guns! And, nobody's really complaining!

Go for it! Freedom of choice (of death) is a fundamental requisite of any True Democracy!

When ignorance of the facts reigns who am I to complain ... ?

Well then I'm sure you can point out where the ignorance of the facts is?

Awesome, the government is going to protect us from being provoked, angered or offended. Wow, Utopia awaits us.

I'm Australian. The whole thing is one big ridiculous knee jerk pile of nonsense. It is an extreme law. It hasn't been defined how long companies have to remove offending content. It assumes that companies WANT to keep harmful material on their platforms! It's not as if the Christchurch videos weren't dealt with. Anyone could go out tomorrow and live stream themselves massacring 50 people and nothing could stop it unless they used some obvious key words in the live stream title! The only way to stop another live stream of a massacre is to stop live streaming. It really is that simple.

Look back at the infographics I have posted instead of just reading the last post that came up on your screen.

A "debate forum" is a place where you follow the to-and-fro amongst participants, unlike a "message-board".

You are very likely to be much happier on the latter ... !

It's an absurd violation of their freedom of speech. Facebook and co should simply withdraw from our market in protest.

10 years prison for sharing the video, what a joke.

I just saw a short video about this. This guy, forget his name, thinks this is just the beginning of the violent part of the Civil War the U.S. has been in for the last thirty or more years.

Do you think this is a first strike meant to get others started? Or was this guy just a one of a kind wing nut?

The single biggest factor that elevates the perceived gun violence in the USA is urban center violence, perpetrated largely by street gangs and drug trafficking. Cities like Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, South Los Angeles, New York, East St. Louis, Miami...the urban environment invites illegal drugs which in turn invites illegal guns and gun violence. Federal statistics really don't put their numbers into any meaningful context.

The difference between the USA and most of the rest of the world is that Americans have a real problem with giving away their rights because of a fraction of a percent of the population who are socially and culturally violent and cannot be trusted with the responsibility of freedom.

Always has been. They are influencing our government, too. I just don't understand why they are and not the citizens of the U. S. I think we are in for a war.

No the problem with America IS the availability of guns that is fueling the rise of street gangs

Your inner cities are no different from ours or England or Europe. EVERY country now is multi-racial and high density
