And the cracks in the NRA's wall begin....

As a Progressive Socialist I do not agree with banning "assault weapons". Mainly because it was the NRA that coined the term in the first place to sell more rifles, and has no real meaning.

That a Republican mayor of a good sized city in Florida has come out in favor of a ban is telling, though.

Mayors against guns has always had a decent following because they were the people seeing the deaths on a daily basis

Hitler is generally credited with coining the term 'assault rifle'. Anyhow, it's silly, assault is a behavior, not an object.

Armalite Rifle, the AR does not stand for 'assault rifle'. A common misconception, born of ignorance.

That looks like a very old advertisement.

If its pre-1986 (most likely it is) it was legal to purchase newly manufactured machines guns at the time.

    It has not been since.

    Did you not know this?

Yeah, sure. A better joke is self IDing as a "progressive socialist". More like 'regressive'.

Have any evidence to back your claim the NRA coined the term?

"Conservatives in media have adopted the false National Rifle Association claim that the term “assault weapon” was invented by proponents of assault weapons bans in order to arbitrarily single out certain firearms for further regulation. However, before the gun industry trade association attempted to rebrand assault weapons as “modern sporting rifles” in 2009 -- a change in terminology also adopted by the NRA -- the gun industry and firearm publications routinely used the term assault weapon to describe the very military-style semi-automatic rifles that would be covered by Sen. Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban."

Trust me, legislators make their living defining the most difficult concepts for the purposes of passing statutes. No one care what the NRA or Adolph meant. Let the Dems figure out what they want to regulate and cobble together language as some close proximity in 2020 -2022, just to get a something to a floor vote, and they can tweak that definition in a subsequent session. Thats how the process always works anyway.

Which the NRA and firearms manufacturers gladly adopted until 2009 when they then claimed it was a "made up" term invented by the Left. Although I'm not surprised your memory is as poor as it is. That Kool-Aid does funny things to the mind.

Relatively few gun deaths are committed with 'assault weapons'. The majority are with handguns. Lets say the left gets their 'assault weapons' ban.
How many shootings with semi auto pistols before the left wants to ban those? No one is buying the lie that the left does not want an all out ban.

Why do we need to tweak the definition? The NRA was calling the AR-15 an "assault weapon" long before Feinstein, or any other Dem, did. Now they just deny doing so. Thankfully, the internet's memory is longer than that of your typical right wing gun nut.

Relatively few Catholic priests molest little boys. Should we just ignore those that do?

We always need to tweak technical definitions in statutes as legislators understand exactly what works and what does not for their own purposes. The common parlance definition used by the NRA is good for a very superficial understanding of the legislative intent. 'Assault weapon ban' works as a vague label for our public imaginations.

Your petty insults aside, I provided evidence of the origin of the term. I think the term is stupidly misleading, no matter who uses it. "Assault" is an action, not an object.

As a "progressive socialist" you should be careful throwing around the 'kool aide' term.

I think the more disturbing element of the story is the implication that the Mayors first act in the event of a problem is to pray (and he doesn’t say what he prayed for) and only if that doesn’t work does he consider actually doing something himself (and even that is merely telling other people that they need to do something about it). He doesn’t sound like a very proactive administrator to me.

I'd say it was reasonably inferred from your post, but not necessarily implied by its author. No harm done.
