Sounds like he has no clue as to what he is going to start, if he can convince LEO's to go along and can figure out where to send them without first starting a form of registration and tracking.

Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke said he would send police door-to-door to confiscate guns that weren't turned in.

Washington, DC – Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke doubled-down on his plan to take legally-owned “weapons of war” away from U.S. citizens and said he would send police door-to-door to take the guns away.

O’Rourke has focused much of his campaign’s time and attention on promising to ban all “assault-style” rifles, such as the popular AR-15s, because they have been used in several mass shootings in the United States.

However, the candidate has been wishy-washy until now as to how he would actually take the guns out of the hands of their owners who purchased the weapons legally.

At first, O’Rourke claimed that American gun owners would “do the right thing” and turn in their guns if the laws were changed during his administration, the Washington Examiner reported.

He continued to claim that people who own AR-15s and AR-47s have told him they don’t need their guns and they’re willing to give them up.

"My faith is in this country and in my fellow Americans following the law and listening to people who own AK-47s and AR-15s who acknowledge, who concede, they don’t need it for self-protection," the candidate said. "They don’t need it to hunt. Its real, true purpose and use is on a battlefield."

“To be clear, I’m not talking about confiscating anybody’s guns,” he said. “But I do think that for those weapons of war – AR-15s, AK-47s – these were designed and sold to the militaries of the world to kill people on the battlefield and there are more than 16 million of them in America, and we’ve seen the devastating effect they can have in Dayton, Ohio or El Paso, Texas, or Odessa, not too far from where I live.

And for those who don’t voluntarily give up their “assault rifles,” he told MSNBC there would be consequences.

I think there would be a visit by law enforcement to recover that firearm and to make sure that it is purchased - bought back - so that it cannot potentially be used against somebody else.

He may be trying to emulate Trump ("I'll build a wall and make Mexico pay for it") by over-promising and taking a firm stand on an issue. It worked for Trump.

Where does it say he plans to send cops door to door to confiscate AR-15s? From the passage quoted by OP it says:

And for those who don’t voluntarily give up their “assault rifles,” he told MSNBC there would be consequences.

Does it say anywhere that those consequences would be door to door confiscation?

Big difference between the two, Beto has zero chance of being nominated, the Democrats will run a senile brain dead candidate like Biden or Warren, someone they can manipulate, not a loose cannon, with a big mouth like Beto.

    That's pretty telling....

I like how below that quote in the article it explicitly states "He failed to address how he would convince police officers to carry out his plan."

He also failed to elaborate on how exactly he would even carry this out even if LEO's agreed to do it seeing how quite a large number of these weapons are unregistered. Does he plan to just send the cops to everyone's house to ask? Then give a blanket search warrant to allow them to enter your home to check? Give rewards to neighbors to point fingers at each other if they think you might have one in your basement? Order all judges to grant search warrants based on hearsay?

Beto is a quack plain and simple. The epitome of just spitting out nonsense with no actual plan to carry it out. Perhaps some lawyers can chime in but based on my rudimentary understanding of American law and civil liberties I'm pretty sure the cops aren't allowed to just search your house for no reason. If I call the cops right now and say I think my neighbor has a meth lab in his basement then it's going to take more than just me saying that for the cops to convince a judge to grant a search warrant over there. Probable cause is a little more than just word of mouth.

A lot of Sheriff's being elected would advise Beto to go pound sand and do the job himself, the other problem is LEO's take an oath to support the Constitution and Doing what Beto wants would be a violation of that oath.

I find it funny that so many politicians, and people in general, fail to understand that the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution is part of what protects the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. The Constitution gives the people the right to own firearms partly in order to protect themselves from the government telling them they can't own firearms...

The notion that the people will willingly give them up "because Australia did it" is just not grounded in reality and I struggle to understand why so many people keep touting that as some sort of evidence that this would work.

"I think just as in any law that is not followed or flagrantly abused, there have to be consequences or else there is no respect for the law".

I like this quote, because as with any discussion on this issue it ignores the elephant in the room. This isn't just "any law", this is a law that has to be enforced against those who you KNOW are armed with, In Beto's own incorrect words, "weapons of war". That is what separates this "law" from other laws and adds a huge elephant in the room dynamic to this situation that everybody always conveniently ignores. Not only that, this would be a "law" that a fairly large percentage of the nation doesn't even believe is legal to pass.

So you've got a law that many don't even think is legally allowed to be a law that says people armed with "weapons of war" will have their weapons confiscated by force....

Does nobody else see how this is not quite the same as "any other law"?

As I stated a few weeks ago in regards to this situation I live in the real world and I look at things from a real world perspective, not how I think the world "should be" or how I "want it to be", but how it actually is. Lets magically say that Beto's law passes. A few days later there is a protest in the street with 300 people standing there with AR-15s and AK-47's slung on their shoulders. Not being threatening or anything just standing there protesting as folks do all the time.

What exactly are you going to do about it? Arrest them? How? They have guns. Shoot them? They have guns....

I am genuinely curious to see how anyone in support of an AR confiscation would tackle my above scenario. Because that's what would happen most likely. I asked that in a different thread and nobody tackled it.

If the Dumbocrats try something this stupid, it would be like the 1946 battle of Athens, Tennessee on a national scale.

I like Beto, but he’s taking extreme positions trying to stay relevant. It won’t work for him.

Frankly, I'm loving all this honesty! These are positions that Democratic candidates held but would never say unless they were accidentally caught on mike or making some other Kinsey-like gaffe. In the Trump era, Democrats are letting their hair down, turning that chair around and telling it like it is.

Fantastic that all the cards are finally getting thrown onto the table!

Close but not quite there, the Second enforces the Declaration of Independence, which invokes the naturalized God given right that the people shall have the right to "life, liberty and happiness."

And the preservation of life is the most important part of the Second, for if that fails, nothing beyond "the preservation of life" can exist.

Maybe or maybe not. We've known that demographic changes are making it possible to become more and more crazy without the Democrats suffering any electoral loss. I don't know if 2020 is that year but virtually all of the Democratic candidates have said some totally crazy things since the race began that have not been hurt by them at all.

Good point, but how much of the damage they are doing to themselves is being suppressed by the MSM?

Well Beto's dumb remarks weren't; although they couldn't have suppressed it if they tried since he rolled that out during the last debate. But it doesn't matter. Just the open stuff that's reported on is crazy enough.

All the while confirming as indisputable fact, what firearm owners in the united states have been saying for decades. It is now impossible for any individual who belongs to the democrat party to claim that no one is seeking to deprive legal firearm owners of their property, without the campaign message of Beto O'Rourke being presented as evidence to the contrary.

Betos idea is never going to work.

iMO, all States should issue a gun license for all gun purchases regardless of who you are purchasing the gun from.

And you have to apply for the license and get approved prior to the gun purchase. The seller should make a copy of the license and keep it in their records after reporting the purchase to the State. easy.

After what has just been stated by a current Presidential Candidate (who's sentiments represent the same mentality as the other candidates who are just smart enough to remain less direct about it), which is the discussion of this thread, surely you can understand why a proposal such as the one you mentioned would not be very popular among gun owners.

You have to have a fishing, hunting, driver license. Why not a gun license? I doubt that any law abiding person who purchased their gun for protection or hunting would have a problem with this.

But, those that are illegals or criminals aren't going to purchase a gun from a legal dealer of guns or apply for a license.

This is why trying to control gun ownership won't keep guns out of criminals hands.

Gun laws will only regulate citizens that are lawful.

Beto is a goof ball. I dare him to knock on doors and try to take guns away from criminals.
Gun control is not what is needed. Society needs to allow parents to parent their children. Teachers need to discipline students. Problem children need access to counseling and their parents need to participate. people need to attend church or participate in another group that supports working together for a common, peaceful good. Like charity and so on. Schools should require students participate in a philanthropy, 20 hours prior to graduation from high school. Good for them.

Fishing, hunting, and operating a motor vehicle on a public right of way are not constitutional rights, whereas firearms ownership is. They are simply not comparable to one another. Nor does fishing, hunting, or operating a motor vehicle on a public right of way pertain to the matter of self defense.
