Around 1990 I lived in the UK and visited East and West Germany very often. Both states were pretty much different. When I traveled from West to East Germany, I felt like I had traveled 50 years back in time.

I think Germany's reunion was a mistake. It caused many problems. Some of them were never solved. It would have been better to have two separate states.

The British aid early on kept the Soviets in the war over that first winter outside Moscow, then US aid dominated after that. The Soviets were pretty much wiped out an would have to sue for terms if it weren't for the Brits, regardless of Hitler's errors re Stalingrad and the southern offensives. The Soviet winter offensives around Moscow were weak and without the 120 or so armor units sent by the Brits they wouldn't have been effective. Same for the Kursk Pocket, crammed with Allied armor and other supplies allowing the Soviets to launch an offensive from there.

They could have have lost for other reasons, namely Hitler being insane, for one, but left to just Soviets vs Germans the Soviets lost.

 

I disagree. The Soviets were up arming (partially with Nazi training) long before they went to war.

The soviets would have beaten the Nazi's, and the Japanese-it just took them longer to mobilize.

You should take a look at what was left of the Soviet military after the German invasions wiped it out. What they had before Barbarossa was gone in months.
