I can fully sympathize with both sides of the equation. I would hope that new arrangements would not be retrospective. That is, that Brits who are already settled in Europe would be afforded unchanged or at least preferential status, and vice versa for those already in Britain.

Apparently you have no idea how difficult it is to get a residence permit, work permit etc., how expensive, time consuming the process is, lets say in the US.
Even a 6 month tourist visa is a lengthy process and if you speak just tourist English, you will hardly be able to fill out all the forms. You have to show up at the embassy or consulate, get finger printed and so on, make a appointment, you have to travel to the embassy or consulate. Leave your passport, you get it back within 10 days, background check and if you have the visa, it does not guaranty that you can enter, because the guys at the border, air port or what ever, work for a different outfit.

Why would you say that? I’m in favor of nation states: the U.S., the U.K., Brazil, Japan, Spain, etc.

I’m against any governmental body that claims to be superior to the American Constitution and government.

Oh I do know, all too well, from work and residency in various countries - way more convulated and expensive than a 6 month travel visa, believe me.

That's why I said this, in response to Montegriffo's post about the impact of Brexit on Brits currently living/working in the EU:

The EU is based on the USA model of states. So if the EU model is a bad idea then so is the United STATES of America

You are clearly not aware of the supremacy of the UK parliament.
Rules passed in the European parliament have to be passed in the UK parliament before they become law here.
This is why the UK was not part of the Schengen zone and kept its own currency when everyone else adopted the Euro.
The nonsense repeated by uninformed Americans about a loss of freedom and sovereignty is just plain wrong.
No matter how many times you tell them this they just won't drop it.
I think it has far more to do with the fact they feel they have the right to ignore UN resolutions and be the only nation on Earth which is not a part of the Paris accord.

Portugal and Poland are separate countries with different cultures.

Pennsylvania and Illinois have always been in the same country with the same culture.

I don’t know or care about the intricate details of the “Eurozone”. I do know that one world government is an evil concept and any move away from that is positive.

Yes, and just like the US, individual States have the right to have their own laws.
In fact, with the UK out of the way, Brussels is able to move further towards a federalisation of Europe along the lines preferred by Germany and France.

And now they will have the horrifying prospect of having bananas that are too bent available in the stores again.

Exactly, you have no intention of informing yourself and just wish to parrot your one-world government nonsense.

if you were to take a flight from Berlin to Rome, do you need to show an ID on arrival?
    Yes you do!
So, what’s the difference between showing an ID and showing a passport? And no, it’s not the same as traveling within Australia or the US.
In the US I can fly from Chicago IL to Hawaii and on arrival won’t be bothered by any checks - I simply walk out of the airport without showing anyone any identification.

Im willing to bet, short term stays won’t be affected.
For permanent residency - well, that’s the reason why Brits wanted out of EU - they want to be able to control who gets to live there.

Read your own bloody link, will you.
''It was repealed by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1333/2011 of 19 December 2011''.

So what you are saying is that individual nations within the EU are not simply treated as one huge State and in fact retain their own authority to check the eligability of travellers to enter freely?

Doesnt wipe historic fact that the EU was regulating the shape of bananas. This was an active rule for more 15 years!

I was responding to a claim that travel within the EU is very easy and convenient and Brits are going to be burdened now by having to show a passport on arrival.
So, if you need to show an ID on arrival, then how is your EU ID different from a U.K. or a US passport? The argument is pretty much a claim that showing one form of ID on arrival is somehow beneficial or better than showing another form of ID (passport).
When you travel for a visit, it doesn’t matter if you are showing an EU ID, a U.K. or a US passport - you will have to show your ID and you will be allowed to get in.

Yes, regulating the quality of food. Again, read the link where it lists a whole range of quality standards including abnormal curvature. It says nothing about bananas having to be straight or even the degree of curvature which is abnormal. This is just anti-EU clickbait from regulation hating propagandists.
You should insist on a few more regulations yourself and then you wouldn't have to eat bleached chickens, hormone-injected beef, acceptable quantities of rodent crap in your fruit juices and unlabelled GMO foods.

The regulation talks about shape of bananas.
    Own it.

In the US you are less likely to get food borne illness than in the EU.
If it was bad then the beef industry would have been sued by victims a long time ago.
Do you really believe your processed food doesn’t contain contaminants from pests? The US regulation is simply accepting the inevitable fact of life.
There is no proof GMO is bad in any way.

No, the difference is that the internal checks within the EU are to control the movement of non-EU citizens. Now UK citizens will no longer have the right to unrestricted free movement that they previously enjoyed.

No they were not! "Bendy" bananas have always been available in the shops - class I bananas and class II bananas. So perhaps you can explain what this "active rule" was?

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I don’t think any nation should give up any part of its sovereignty to be linked in a collective.

Yes, there are some minor regional differences, Americans shares the same basic culture and values.

I’ve lived in New York, New England, Illinois, and Texas. I’ve been to 47 of the 50 states. One big difference is that drinks like Coca-Cola are called “soda” on the East Coast and “pop” in the Midwest. Overall, that’s not much of a difference.

Food can be different ... barbecue in Texas, Memphis, and North Carolina is distinct. And pizza is different in New York and Chicago. Mexican food is different in Texas and California. It makes for some good (fun) regional rivalries.
