It's time the US Postal Service went away. The amount of actual postal mail is dwindling in this electronic age. It's simply not necessary anymore. Important mail can be delivered by independent contractors or delivery services like UPS, FedEx or Amazon delivery. They are driving the same streets. Paying someone $25 an hour + a golden parachute retirement and Cadillac benefits simply makes no sense. The USPS has resorted to stuffing your mailbox with advertising material that simply ends up in the local landfill without being seen, I throw mine in the trash can on my walk from the mailbox. UPS, FedEx or Amazon delivery drivers could deliver the remaining important mail that requires hard copy delivery.

Perhaps if the post office is to survive, maybe it could serve Banks, Utilities and Municipalities a surcharge for sending paper bills. Raise the price of postage to $1.00 per piece of mail, so as physical mail dwindles the USPS can slowly fade away. Pension funds can be turned over to their former unions for administration and hope they invest wisely.

They could have got a bit of business from me if they would have allowed me to mail hand sanitizer to my daughter that couldn’t find any in her town.

Let's shut down the post office at a time when it is obvious just how essential they are.

    genious!

Just as an fyi. Every serious record and poster collector I know hates UPS and Fedex!! They destroy packages and constantly lie about where something is. If I buy a poster for $500 I want it shipped USPS!

You want to amend the Constitution so it states that we no longer guarantee that no matter where you live you can receive mail?

    Genious!

That's already happened, there are many parts of the U.S. where the USPS mo longer delivers mail.

They could save it if they repealed that completely stupid law that says they have to prefund all Future employee pensions. They would be profitable otherwise. But then I guess how could private companies take over that market share if it showed profits vs it's current losses?

Right here where I live, I have to drive 6 miles to a postal substation where they provide us with P.O. boxes, they stopped rural deliveries over 5 years ago due to budget cuts.

And if I have a package sent that will not fit in a locker I must drive to the PO in Clewiston a 50 mile trip to pick it up.

UPS, FEDEX, and DHL will deliver out here, but not the USPS.

Creative little jab. Where does it say that USPS cannot be expected to adapt to the world around them? No government employee should have benefits unavailable to the average worker in the private sector.

Ever checked to see how much UPS wants to come by and check your front porch everyday to see if you have something to pickup? All the package carriers would have to hire a whole new fleet to do what the USPS does. I get lots of package deliveries via USPS too. Raise the price of a stamp and the public revolts, how dare they charge me $.55 instead of $.50 to come to my house pick up a piece of mail send it across the country and hand delivery to whom I am sending it. Most of those banks and companies who send out mass mailing get a business presort rate. They sort their own mail and drop it off and their location USPS distribution center ready to go into the proper ZIP codes bins and some even do the street sort so it can go right into the carriers truck. I used to sell parts on the sortation equipment they use and called on the various cites.

Privatize it and you won't have a postal system at all or if you do at a much higher direct cost to you as in if you need to send a letter you will have to take it to a shipping location and for me to send a letter 2nd day to my office in another state $20.54, even it was 3 days as USPS can do I bet it would still be $10+.

Don't know what the fate of the USPS is, the Constitution authorizes but does not mandate a postal service.

Guess you haven't. The Constitution "authorizes" it does not "mandate" a postal service

    The Congress shall have Power.................To establish Post Offices and Post Roads;

The postal service and it's employees do a helluva lot more for me than either of my senators or any of my states congress persons do.And they are paid a lot less and do not each have multi million annual office budgets.

We just have to agree to disagree. I don't get any consequential mail in my mailbox. It's all done electronically, by on-line bill pay or through eMail.

And likely he is unaware of the onerous accounting demands placed on USPS back when Clinton was in office.

With Dick Armey and others leading the charge, they put into place extremely hard and unrealistic demands for the future for USPS. He and his were doing as UPS and Fedex had lobbied, as they had private plans to eventually step in as "privatized" mail service.

That the founders would include Postal Service for the citizens of the new Republic provides insight into just how "socialistic" they were in those days.

Every time the gov does something good all the progressives want us to praise socialism, well, here it is in full display, the USPS. They do a great job delivering the mail, and I am not kidding, but they do it while fleecing the taxpayer. I have a friend, a retired postal worker, he could finish his route in 3.5 hours, sat around playing poker the rest of his 8 hour shift, he was forbidden from helping with mail sorting because that was not his job. Government unions baby, gov unions.

Benefits like the ability to get union representation but refuse to pay for it? I agree!

Actually we agree more than not I am just stating the reality. When my sons were doing tours in both wars we could take one of the USPS $10 boxes go to Walmart and fill it with all kinds of goodies and they would have it in a matter of just a couple of days. We did it once a week for years as did LOTS of families. You couldn't do that UPS or FedX. I use certified mail several times a year, the cost will go up dramatically for that. I sued a guy last year, no way I could do that email it had to be hard copies. And again ONLY the USPS visits every house 6 days a week with the exception of some very rural areas theses days. So yes it is going to change and "privatizing" will means lots of that service lost.

And I still get hard copies of lots of my recurring bills and statements, SS notifications, insurance etc......that's just me I get to much email trash, LOTS more than I get snail mail, I have drill down through to get my "official" emails for lack of another term even using a couple of email addresses.
