President Donald Trump on Sunday announced he is extending federal social distancing guidelines until April 30, a directive that appears to backtrack from the president’s remarks last week indicating he wanted the country to go back to work by Easter.

Good to see that Trump listened to some people who realized what a horrible idea it was to float Easter as an "Artificial Deadline".

I felt (from the beginning) that it was a horrible idea to float the Easter Date.

I support this decision, and I feel we may need at least another month.

    Thoughts?

Trump will change his mind as often as Hannity tells him to - that's about all we can count on.

I actually think we need 2-3 months, and should revisit on July 4th. This virus is incredibly contagious, I do believe that it's airborne to a degree and the damage it's doing is unprecedented.

According to Dr. Fauci, as many as 200,000 deaths. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/u...s-of-cases-fauci-warns/ar-BB11S5uv?li=BBnb7Kz

This virus has the same mortality as any Flu bug

What makes it dangerous is that the recovery can be many weeks longer

He said, "It would be nice to reopen by Easter." It was aspirational, not a promise. We all want to "reopen" as soon as possible, but I don't think anyone actually took the Easter hope seriously.

We're forecasting the peak to be April 15th, a few days after Easter and deaths are forecast to be below 10 per day around Memorial Day. That's if everyone continues to practice social distancing. The April 30 date will likely move to May 30 if we are on track.

Trump is REALLY going off the Deep End at this Update.

After he announced the April 30th thing, he has gone completely off the rails.

He is going crazy and attacking CNN.

    And he made this statement:

"If you Disrespect Me, you Disrespect Our Country".

    ^That is Completely DELUSIONAL.

Lots of good soundbites are going to come out of this,

Trump has blown a gasket. :smh:

    Yes, A.N., I agree about July 4th.

There is no sense (whatsoever) in rushing things.

Trump did the right thing. Really, the only thing you can do at this point. We're already losing 500+ people a day. I guess Trump believed them when they told him it's only going to get worse for the next two weeks.

So, what happens May 1st, after we've lost 50,000 people and flattened the curve? Are we going to do an incredibly intrusive testing regime like S. Korea?

    Interesting point.

That way it is right on par with everything else that Trump says.

Yes please. The South Koreans have done a terrific job, and emulating their model is what we can do. As for our 'system of government'? Once this virus clears our system, we can use the courts etc and fight for those freedoms to be restored to the people. But for now, survival takes priority.

I think the other big takeaway is Trump saying we're two weeks away from peak deaths. That kills the last of the "it's like the flu" narrative. By midmonth there will be more deaths from this than the entire flu season.

During a national emergency, everything the President says has to be on point and taken seriously. I assume you agree with this.

    True.

And then, just to be safe, move it to June 30th.

And THEN, The USA Has a Grand Re-Opening on Independence Day:

    That requires tremendous intrusive surveillance.

Was this directed at me? I didn't mention "system of government".

I'm speaking in generalities. As you said, it requires tremendous intrusive surveillance. We can do that *for now*, but when the threat of the virus dissipates eventually we must find a way to win our rights and individual freedoms back.

    That is an interesting point.

I sort of wonder if anything will ever be the same (once Americans have gotten used to social distancing).

Things like "pits" at rock concerts, and how close you can sit next to someone in the park while watching the fireworks, etc.

The way I see it? Some will certainly keep their distance for a time. And maybe some will not want to shake hands again(and I'll respect that.) But like others have also been saying: This just reinforces what we should be doing anyway. Washing hands, and not getting too intimately close with those we don't know.

But, I think for many they'll still sit together and watch the fireworks. Newly formed couples will hold hands and kiss. When this is over, we'll rebuild the human connections we temporarily lost. Just with more awareness on washing our hands and body, and being grateful for our lives.

My thinking is we've made a huge mistake not quarantining New York weeks ago. Residents have fled and many of them went to Florida, undoubtedly bringing the virus with them. Florida is basically in a multi-state tie for 3rd most infected state and if confirmed cases blow up and take rank we can be sure fleeing New Yorkers played their part in making it so.

Because it's a rapidly changing situation. That's why it's idiotic to criticize him for statements on the virus from a month ago.

    Agreed about New York.

Except in absolute emergencies, or essential services, I would be in favor of suspending domestic air travel until April 30th.
